FLAKY BUTTERY BISCUITS

Flaky Buttery Biscuits image

Fresh hot biscuits slathered with butter, topped with a spoonful of jam, and served alongside fluffy scrambled eggs and a salty pork product are the epitome of a cozy breakfast (or dinner).

Provided by Martha Stewart

Categories     Food & Cooking     Breakfast & Brunch Recipes     Bread Recipes

Yield Makes 12 small biscuits

Number Of Ingredients 5

1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon coarse salt
6 tablespoons (3/4 stick) chilled unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
3/4 cup milk (see headnote)

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 450 degrees. Butter or line a baking sheet.
  • In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Using a fork or 2 table knives, combine the butter and flour mixture until it resembles a coarse meal. Slowly add the milk, stirring with a fork, to the desired consistency.
  • For softer biscuits, drop 2 tablespoons of the dough onto the lined baking sheet. For firmer biscuits, turn the dough out onto a clean, lightly floured surface and gently knead just to bring the dough together. Carefully roll out the dough about 3/4 inch thick. Using a biscuit cutter or sturdy glass, cut about 12 biscuits, rerolling any scraps. Place on the lined baking sheet. (The biscuits can be frozen at this point. Freeze on the baking sheet, then remove to a resealable container or plastic bag for easier storage.) Bake the biscuits for 13 to 15 minutes (add 3 to 4 additional minutes for frozen ones), until golden brown. Cool slightly and serve warm.

EASIEST EVER BISCUITS

Easiest ever biscuits image

The simplest biscuits you and the kids will ever bake. We've stamped clean toys into these to decorate them - try your own favourite patterns

Provided by Lulu Grimes

Categories     Snack, Treat

Time 30m

Yield makes 24

Number Of Ingredients 5

200g unsalted butter, softened
200g golden caster sugar
1 large egg
½ tsp vanilla extract
400g plain flour, plus extra for dusting

Steps:

  • Heat the oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6 and line a baking sheet with baking parchment. Put the butter in a bowl and beat it with electric beaters until soft and creamy. Beat in the sugar, then the egg and vanilla, and finally the flour to make a dough. If the dough feels a bit sticky, add a little bit more flour and knead it in.
  • Pull pieces off the dough and roll them out to about the thickness of two £1 coins on a floured surface. The easiest way to do this with small children is to roll the mixture out on a baking mat. Cut out shapes using a 9cm biscuit cutter, or a use the rim of a small glass and peel away the leftover dough around the edges. Press some clean toys gently into the biscuits, making sure you make enough of a mark without going all the way through. Re-roll off-cuts and repeat.
  • Transfer the whole mat or the individual biscuits to the baking sheet and bake for 8-10 mins or until the edges are just brown. Leave to cool for 5 mins, then serve. Will keep for three days in a biscuit tin.

PERFECT HOMEMADE BISCUITS

Perfect Homemade Biscuits image

These easy, homemade biscuits are soft, fluffy, made completely from scratch and can be on your table in about 15 minutes! A weekend staple in our house!

Provided by Trish - Mom On Timeout

Categories     Breakfast

Time 15m

Number Of Ingredients 8

3 cups all-purpose flour
3 tbsp sugar
1/2 tsp salt
4 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp cream of tartar
3/4 cup COLD butter
1 egg
1 cup whole milk

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 450 degrees.
  • The secret to excellent biscuits is COLD BUTTER. Really cold. Many times the biscuit dough gets worked so much that the butter softens before the biscuits even go in the oven. Try cutting the butter into small pieces and stick back in the fridge pulling out only when ready to incorporate into the dough.
  • Combine the dry ingredients in a large bowl.
  • Use a pastry cutter to cut cold butter into flour mixture. Don't go too crazy here - you want to see small, pea-sized pieces of butter throughout the dough.
  • Add in the milk and egg and mix just until the ingredients are combined. The dough will be sticky but don't keep working it. You should be able to see the butter pieces in the dough.
  • Turn the dough out onto a generously floured surface. Sprinkle some flour on to the top of dough so it won't stick to your fingers and knead 10-15 times. If the dough is super sticky just sprinkle on some additional flour.
  • Pat the dough out to 3/4 - 1 inch thickness and cut with a biscuit cutter or glass. I ended up with nine this time but depending on who is snacking on biscuit dough, I can get up to 12 biscuits.
  • Place the biscuits on a lightly greased baking sheet or parchment lined baking sheet and bake for 10 to 15 minutes or until golden brown on top.
  • For extra yumminess, brush the tops of the biscuits with melted butter...

EASY HOMEMADE DINNER BISCUITS

Easy Homemade Dinner Biscuits image

Looking for a quick & simple biscuit recipe? This recipe for easy homemade dinner biscuits is a winner. Extra butter & extra salt mean extra yum!

Provided by Tiffany

Categories     Breads

Time 25m

Yield 12

Number Of Ingredients 5

2 cups flour*
2 1/2 tsp baking powder
3/4 tsp salt
6 Tbsp cold unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
1/2-3/4 cup milk

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 450F.
  • Combine the flour, baking powder and salt in a large bowl.
  • Cut in the butter with a pastry blender or your hands, taking care not to melt the butter or create a paste. The mixture should resemble coarse breadcrumbs.
  • Add 1/2 cup of milk and combine until the flour is moistened. Knead the dough into a ball, pressing against the sides of the bowl to pick up any small pieces of dough. If additional milk is needed, add just 2 Tbsp at a time, kneading thoroughly after each addition. Note: The dough should not be wet enough to stick to your hands or the bowl. It should be dry enough to handle easily, and when you're done kneading, the bowl should be fairly clean.
  • Pull off a golf ball-sized portion and form into a ball. Press down slightly and place the biscuits on a large cookie sheet, 1″ apart.
  • Roll out the dough into a rectangle, approximately 1/2″ thick. Cut into equal pieces and place on a large cookie sheet, 1″ apart.
  • Bake for 8 minutes.
  • Rotate the pan 180 degrees and bake for another two minutes, if needed. The biscuits should be light golden brown on the bottom, and barely browning on top.

EASY HOMEMADE BREAKFAST BISCUITS

Easy Homemade Breakfast Biscuits image

Make a fresh homemade batch of quick and easy biscuits for breakfast or to pair with mashed potatoes and gravy for dinner.

Provided by Jolinda Hackett

Categories     Breakfast     Brunch     Bread

Time 22m

Number Of Ingredients 5

2 cups all-purpose flour (plus extra for kneading dough)
1 tablespoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/3 cup shortening (cold)
3/4 cup milk (2% or whole)

Steps:

  • Gather the ingredients. Position a rack in the center of the oven and heat to 450 F.
  • In a large bowl, stir together the flour, baking powder , and the salt.
  • Cut in the shortening using a pastry cutter or two knives until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  • Make a well in the dry mixture and add in the milk all at once.
  • Stir together with a fork just until the dough clings together. You want it to still be a bit lumpy; this will help your biscuits be perfectly light and flaky, creating those delectable and airy layers when baking.
  • Lightly flour a clean work surface. Gently knead your biscuit dough just a few times to bring the dough together.
  • Roll out or pat the dough to 1/2-inch thickness.
  • Cut the dough into 2 1/2-inch rounds with a flour dipped biscuit cutter. Be sure to push the cutter straight down, without twisting (this prevents layers from forming). Reroll the dough scraps once more to form additional biscuits.
  • Space each piece of cut dough evenly on an ungreased baking sheet.
  • Bake until the biscuits have risen and are lightly golden brown on top, about 12 minutes.
  • Serve warm and enjoy!
