COCOA AND SHEA LIP BALM
Hand crafted lip balms are so superior to its commercial counterpart. My lip balms were one of the biggest sellers in my toiletry business....because they worked!!! These are absolutely yummy!!! Beeswax can be found in small pellets for easy handling....just weight out what you need. The oils and butters can be interchanged. This does make up alot, but the recipe can be cut down to make up the amount you need, -- or -- gather some friends together to share a batch -- or -- give these away as gifts. Detailed instructions are included. The computer does not recognize the metric system very well, so the proper measurement are in brackets. The conversion to ounces = 28.375 g to 1 ounce

Steps:
- Before starting, make sure your work station is as clean as possible. Have clean utensils and pots -- the tubes you are putting your product in have been cleaned. You want to keep your finished product to stay as sterile as possible.
- Combine all the ingredients and heat until just melted, roughly 3 - 4 minutes. Do not let the mixture come to a boil. Essential oils are heat sensitive, so let the lip balm mixture cool down until warm to the touch. Work quickly to pour the balm into either pots or tubes.
- Let stand, undisturbed until the mixture solidify. When the balm has solidified, there will be a "well" in the middle of the tube/pot. Take a knife and smooth the edges down for a nicer look.
- This recipe could be cut into half or into fourths. You don't need exact measurements, like you do with cooking. Use the ingredients as a rough estimate but make sure that your beeswax/oil ratio is roughly the same. If you used this whole recipe, you could get roughly 24 - 28 lip tubes.
- Vitamin E has it's own healing properties, but it is used here as a preservative. With any home products, there is a shelf life of roughly 2 years. I date my finished product -- but I have usually used it up by then!
- Shea Butter has some wonderful healing properties, but this product is not as smooth as some of the other butters, so the final product will have a slight gritty feeling to it. Once applied though, it will melt into the skin, leaving the lips soft and smooth.
- Because these lip balms do not have the heavy beeswax as does the commercial counterparts, they could possibly "melt" if left in cars during the heat of the summer.
- Caution: These lip balms do not have the heavy preservatives that the commercial products have. With any home product that is "applied" to the skin, keep in mind about how clean your skin is and who is going to use it. The mouth is a huge breeding ground for germs. Beware that if you pass your balm around you could possible contaminate your stick. If you are using pots, try to flick some balm out on your fingernail, then apply that way. The cleaner the enviroment it is going to be used in the longer the shelf life it is going to have. Just some "food for thought"!

- Pour or place all of your oils and butters (excluding your essential oils) into your heatproof container. I find heatproof, glass beakers are the best option for this job. Place the beaker into a saucepan of water, taking care to make sure the water is lower than your beaker’s rim (this is called a water bath). Simmer over a low heat so that your butters melt into the oils slowly.I sometimes use a microwave to speed this part up. Nuke it in 30 second increments and make sure you’re not using any metal.
- Once melted, remove from the heat and saucepan and allow it to sit for a short while. Do not allow the mixture to thicken. If it does thicken, pop it back in the saucepan, melt and have another go.
- After a little less than a minute of waiting, the mixture should leave a sort of residue on the sides of the beaker. At this point add the ssential oils, a pipette can come in real handy here, and stir well.
- Working quickly as not to let it cool, pour your mixture into your chosen glass, aluminium or polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic storing container. If you have to spoon it in, you’ve let it cool for too long (that’s okay, just means the surface will be less smooth on the finished product).Do not attempt to melt the mixture again like in step 2, as the essential oils have now been added and will lose their active properties or scent when subjected to heat. Sometimes this happens to me when I’m a bit absent-minded and I warm it up again without thinking, but I never throw it away. You still have a lovely balm, and the rest of the oils and butters are still excellent for your skin.Once the mixture is in the tube, container or whatever you are using to store your product, do not put the lid on until the mixture has completely cooled.
