Brewed coffee and instant coffee granules add rich color and depth to this sweet-and-sour sauce. It's wonderful spooned over grilled chicken or pork chops. -Julia Bushree, Georgetown, Texas

COFFEE BARBECUE SAUCE FROM TEXAS HIGHWAYS
I like this sauce because it's not overly sweet or thick and ketchupy. I like a sauce that lets the flavor of the meat come through. I always serve on the side in case I have guests that do not wish to have sauce on their meat. Makes a pretty good mop if your meat is drying out before the center is done. I prefer it on beef rather than pork personally. Rumor has it that it cures hangovers if you drink it straight, I am not that brave, lol.

BLACK COFFEE BARBECUE SAUCE
It's great to know folks like this sauce so much! I wish I could take credit for it but it was adopted after the original member left. Thank you, all, just the same. I have made the recipe with regular brewed coffee but highly recommend the espresso. In a pinch use strong instant if you have nothing else. The acid of the coffee balances the sweetness of the other ingredients.

- In a medium saucepan, combine all ingredients and whisk to combine. Cook over medium heat until the mixture comes to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 25 minutes.
- Transfer to a lidded jar and chill in the refrigerator. I recommend letting the sauce sit in the fridge overnight before using to really marry the flavors together. This sauce will last 2 weeks in the fridge if stored in an airtight container.
