Categories     Breakfast     Brunch     Drinks

Time 5m

Number Of Ingredients 2

10 ounces coarsely ground coffee (((see post for how to tell if your coffee is the right grind size))
40 ounces filtered water ((use the best quality water you can get))

Steps:

  • Set up your coffee brewer. If you have the OXO cold brew maker, set the filter in the base of the brewing container, then screw on the filter cap. Turn the container around and add in your ground coffee.
  • Slowly pour water over the coffee grounds in a circular motion, distributing the water as evenly as possible. With the OXO cold brew maker, there is a "rainmaker" cap that helps you with this process.
  • Once the coffee has finished blooming, give it a quick and gentle stir. Blooming is when the coffee expands and bubbles, releasing carbon dioxide. It can take up to 10 minutes if you use the full recipe.
  • Set the coffee aside and let it brew for 16-24 hours. We always aim for 18 hours and leave it to brew in the refrigerator.
  • Once brewing is finished, drain the water and filter out the coffee. (This is the part that is tricky if you don't have a cold brew coffee maker.)With the OXO cold brew coffee maker, you simply set it on the stand and flip the switch. It should take approximately 15-20 minutes with the correct grind size.If you use a French press, use the plunger and carefully pour out the water. Try your best not to agitate the coffee grounds. You may also want to filter it through a paper filter. To do so, pour the coffee out of the French press. Then, set up a pour over coffee maker and pour the cold brew concentrate through the paper. Don't do it in one step because if you have to keep tipping and uprighting the French press as the concentrate filters through the paper filter, you will agitate the coffee grounds too much.
  • Store the concentrate in the refrigerator.
  • To serve the coffee, dilute 2 ounces (60 milliliters) (1/4 cup) of coffee concentrate to 4-6 ounces (120-180 milliliters) (1/2 - 3/4 cup) water or milk. You can use serve it either hot or cold. Enjoy!

HOW TO MAKE STARBUCKS-STYLE COLD BREW COFFEE AT HOME

How To Make Starbucks-Style Cold Brew Coffee at Home image

From picking the right coffee to the brewing method that leaves you with super smooth coffee

Provided by Meghan Splawn

Categories     Breakfast     Beverage     Coffee     Iced coffee

Number Of Ingredients 2

8 ounces whole coffee beans
8 cups (2 quarts) water, preferably flitered

Steps:

  • Grind the coffee beans into a coarse grind. Grind the coffee beans in a coffee grinder until they are coarsely ground. Depending on the capacity of the coffee grinder, you may need to grind the coffee in batches. The goal is a coarse grind about the size of demerara or raw sugar.
  • Combine the ground coffee and water in the jar. Pour the ground coffee in to a 3-quart jar or pitcher. Add the water.
  • Stir to incorporate. Gently stir the coffee with the water until well-blended. The coffee will float to the top as it sits, but don't stress about that - just make sure all of the coffee gets wet.
  • Steep the coffee overnight in the fridge. Cover and refrigerate the cold brew for at least 18 hours or up to 24 hours.
  • Strain the coffee concentrate. Line a fine-mesh strainer with cheesecloth and set it over a large measuring cup. Slowly pour the coffee concentrate through the strainer. Depending on the size of your strainer, you may need to strain the coffee in batches. Fight the temptation to squeeze or press the coffee grounds in the cheesecloth.
  • Transfer to the cold brew to a clean jar for longer-term storage. Once strained, transfer the coffee to clean, airtight jars for long-term storage. Cover and refrigerate for up to 2 weeks.
  • Make your iced coffee. To serve, fill a glass with 1 cup ice cubes. Pour 1/2 cup the cold brew over the ice, add 1/2 cup cold water, and stir to combine. Add sweet cream or half-and-half if desired and enjoy.

COLD BREW COFFEE RATIO

Cold Brew Coffee Ratio image

Determining how you will use your coffee will help you decide on the best cold brew coffee ratio. Cold brew is great poured over ice, as a part of a latte, or reheated and enjoyed hot.

Provided by Michelle Miller

Categories     Drinks

Time 10m

Number Of Ingredients 6

3 cups water
3 ounces whole coffee beans
2 1/2 cups water
3 ounces whole coffee beans
1 cup brewed cold brew coffee
1/4-1/2 cup hot water

Steps:

  • In a blender or a coffee grinder, coarsely grind beans. Check the photo above to see the texture. It's important to very coarsely grind beans so that the grounds are easy to filter out and your coffee doesn't turn silty. Make sure all beans are broken up, but are in much bigger pieces than you'd typically use.
  • Add coffee grounds to a French press, or alternately, a mason jar. Pour water on top of coffee grounds, and then use a long handled spoon to mix the grounds into the water. The grounds will float, but make sure they are all wet.
  • Allow the coffee to cold brew in the refrigerator or in a cool space in your house over night or up to 24 hours.
  • If using a French press, just press down the handle to strain the coffee grounds, and then the coffee is ready to use. If using a mason jar, I have found using a nut milk bag is the easiest way to quickly drain the coffee and separate the grounds. Cheese cloth also works.
  • Enjoy the coffee poured over ice, mixed with milk for a latte, or reheated as a hot beverage.

  • Grind the coffee into a coarse grind. The grind size should be between that of filter coffee and french press coffee. However, it depends on your coffee maker's filter basket size. Adjust accordingly.
  • Pour the coffee grinds into the filter basket of your cold brew coffee maker and set it up so you can add water.
  • Slowly pour the hot water over the coffee grounds, just enough so the coffee grounds are wet. (This is called a hot bloom.)
