HOW TO MAKE SLOW COOKER REFRIED BEANS
Steps:
- Pour dried beans in the slow cooker. Add shredded onion, garlic, cumin, salt and cayenne pepper. For a richer flavor, add a ham bone or a couple of bacon strips to the crock. Pour the water over the top of the beans and cover tightly. Turn slow cooker on high and cook for 8-10 hours. You can also cook on low for 12 hours or longer.Once beans are very tender, remove the ham bone or bacon if necessary. Depending on your slow cooker, you may have excess liquid in the crock. Scoop 1 ½ cups of the bean liquid out of the crock and reserve.Use an immersion blender or a potato masher to smash the beans into a relatively smooth texture. Add some of the bean liquid back in if needed to reach the right consistency. Salt and pepper to taste.Serve as-is or sprinkle with your favorite toppings. Serve warm.Note: Some optional topping suggestions include shredded cheese, sliced jalapenos, chopped green onions, sour cream, and cayenne pepper.

- Place everything in the crockpot and stir to combine. Cook on High for 6-8 hours. (Mine were done by 6 hours but dinner wasn't ready, so I left them in there-you're just going to mush them up anyway) :) If the liquid seems low while you're cooking, just add a little extra chicken stock or water.
- Once the beans are cooked, remove the onion, strain them and reserve the liquid. Use a potato masher to smash them into gooey bits. Add the reserved water to get the consistency you want. Serve hot and topped with onions, cheese, sour cream, in a tortilla, use for bean dip...you get the idea. :)
- Add all the ingredients to the pot, press Beans/Chili and adjust time to 50 minutes. Allow a natural pressure release when cook time is up. Transfer to another bowl and follow instructions above for mashing.

- Place all the ingredients in a large slow cooker. I have this 6 quart slow cooker, but I wouldn’t use anything smaller than a 4 quart.
- Cook on high for 8 hours if using dry or soaked beans. Cook on high for 4 hours if using canned beans.
- Using an immersion blender (or potato masher, or alternating in a blender), mash the beans until they reach your desired consistency, using some of the cooking water to help thin. Remember that you can always add more water to thin, but you cannot make them thicker again.
