Dal Bhat Red Lentils With Rice Recipe

  1. red lentil
  2. vegetable oil
  3. red onion
  4. garlic cloves
  5. ginger
  6. salt
  7. mustard seeds
  8. turmeric
  9. cumin seed
  10. coriander powder
  11. tomatoes
  12. butter
  13. cilantro
  14. water
  15. basmati rice


  1. wash the lentils and rinse a couple of times
  2. be careful to remove any stones
  3. if you have time , soak the lentils in water as long as you can , up to overnight , before you cook
  4. they get very soft and cook faster
  5. start rice preparation according to package directions
  6. prep the onion , garlic , ginger , tomatoes , and cilantro / green onion and set aside
  7. heat oil on high
  8. add ginger , garlic and onion , and stir fry on high until the onion is a little brown on the edges , 1-2 minutes
  9. stir in cumin seeds , salt , turmeric , mustard seed and coriander powder
  10. turn the heat down to medium and cook for 2 minutes , stirring often
  11. add tomatoes and butter
  12. stir , cover with lid and cook for 4 minutes
  13. stir in the lentils , cover and cook for 5 minutes
  14. after cooking for 5 minutes , add one cup of water , cover with lid and cook for 5 more minutes
  15. when the 5 minutes are up , stir in 2 more cups of water , as the water will begin to decrease as you cook
  16. continue cooking on medium for 10 minutes
  17. the dal should be cooked and ready to serve
  18. if not tender , cook a little longer , adding more water if necessary
  19. sprinkle the chopped cilantro and / or green onion on top of the dal and serve with or on top of the rice
  20. it is typical to serve with chutney or spicy peppers
