These were inspired by a cook named Ana, a Brazilian food blogger living in Italy. I really hope you give these gorgeous looking, and very delicious apple roses a try soon. Enjoy!

1 large red apple, cored and very thinly sliced
¼ cup white sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 sheet frozen puff pastry, thawed
¼ cup melted butter
1 egg
2 teaspoons water
1 teaspoon confectioners' sugar

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). Butter 2 small ramekins (6 to 8 ounce) and dust with white sugar.
  • Place apple slices on a plate, overlapping slightly if necessary. Microwave on High about 45 seconds just until slices have softened a bit. Cover plate with plastic wrap and a kitchen towel.
  • Mix together sugar and cinnamon in a bowl.
  • Roll puff pastry sheet to less than 1/8-inch thickness. Using a pizza cutter, cut two 3-inch by 12-inch rectangles. Reserve remaining pieces for another use.
  • Spread melted butter over dough; top with a generous amount of cinnamon-sugar. Place apple slices along 1 long edge of dough, about 1/4 inch beyond edge of dough, overlapping slices slightly. Fold bottom half of dough over the apple slices to form a long "folder" of dough with rounded edges of apple slices exposed.
  • Beat egg and water together in a bowl. Paint surface of dough with egg wash. Sprinkle with more cinnamon-sugar, to taste.
  • Starting from one end, roll dough not too tightly to form a rose-shaped pastry. Seal roll with end of dough strip.
  • Transfer roses to prepared ramekins. Sprinkle with a little more cinnamon-sugar. Place ramekins directly on middle rack of preheated oven.
  • Bake until well browned, about 45 minutes. Remove ramekins with tongs and place on baking sheet to cool 5 to 10 minutes. Remove apple roses from ramekins and finish cooling on rack. Dust with confectioners' sugar before serving.

1 frozen puff pastry sheet (thawed)
flour (to sprinkle the counter)
2 red fuji apples
1/2 Medium lemon juice
3 tablespoons apricot preserve
cinnamon (optional)
powder sugar for decorating

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 375F.
  • Take 2 apples and slice them in half, remove the core then slice them into thin slices. Make sure to leave the peel on the apples.
  • Take half of the lemon and squeeze the juice into a bowl filled with water. Add apple slices, make sure there is enough water to cover all of the slices. Microwave it for 3 minutes, this helps soften the apple slices.
  • Place 3 tablespoons of apricot jam into a small dish. Add 2 tablespoons of water and microwave it for 1 minute.
  • Drain the apples. Now remove the dough from the box, then from a bag. Flour the counter and top of the dough, take rolling pin and stretch the dough few times. Using pizza cutter slice into 6 strips.
  • Spread apricot jam over each strip. Add apple slices. Sprinkle cinnamon. Fold the strip in half. Roll into a beautiful apple rose. Place each rose into a muffin sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake for 45 minutes or until the dough is fully baked.
  • Let them cool. Sprinkle with powder sugar and serve, with hot coffee or tea! Enjoy!

1 yellow onion, chopped
1 red bell pepper, chopped
1 Anaheim chile pepper, chopped
2 red jalapeno pepper, chopped
4 garlic cloves, minced
2 ½ pounds lean ground beef
¼ cup Worcestershire sauce
1 pinch garlic powder, or to taste
2 beef bouillon cubes
1 (12 fluid ounce) can or bottle light beer (such as Coors®)
1 (28 ounce) can crushed San Marzano tomatoes
1 (14.5 ounce) can fire-roasted diced tomatoes
1 (12 ounce) can tomato paste
½ cup white wine
2 tablespoons chili powder
2 tablespoons ground cumin
1 tablespoon brown sugar
1 tablespoon chipotle pepper sauce
2 ½ teaspoons dried basil
1 ½ teaspoons smoked paprika
1 teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon dried oregano

Steps:

  • Heat oil in a large pot over medium heat; cook and stir onion, bell pepper, Anaheim pepper, jalapeno peppers, and garlic in the hot oil until softened.
  • Meanwhile, heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Cook and stir beef in the hot skillet until browned and crumbly, 5 to 7 minutes; add Worcestershire sauce and garlic powder. Crumble bouillon cubes over beef and add beer. Continue to cook , scraping any browned bits from the bottom of the skillet, until liquid is hot, about 3 minutes. Stir beef mixture into pepper mixture.
  • Stir crushed tomatoes, diced tomatoes, tomato paste, and wine to the beef mixture. Season with chili powder, 2 tablespoons cumin, brown sugar, pepper sauce, basil, paprika, salt, oregano, and black pepper. Bring to a boil and reduce heat to medium-low. Cover and simmer until meat and vegetables are very tender and flavors have developed in the chili, about 90 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • Mix kidney beans into beef and vegetables. Continue to simmer until beans are hot, about 30 minutes more.
  • Blend sour cream, cilantro, and remaining 1/2 teaspoon cumin in a food processor until smooth. Serve sour cream mixture with chili.

2-3 medium sized apples (you need 60-70 1/8 -inch slices)
3 tablespoons unsalted butter (divided, melted, and cooled)
2 tablespoons lemon juice (freshly squeezed)
¼ teaspoon salt
3 tablespoons apricot preserves (I used one made with cane sugar)
1 tablespoon coconut sugar
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon (divided)
Pinch of ground nutmeg
1 9 1/2 by 9-inch sheet puff pastry, defrosted overnight in the fridge

Steps:

  • Pre-heat the oven to 375 degrees. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Set aside.
  • Core the apples and slice them as thin as you can (ideally ⅛-inches). They don't have to perfect. As long as they are thin, you should be fine.
  • Place thin apple slices, 1 tablespoon butter, lemon juice, and salt in a bowl. Toss to coat.
  • Spread apples on the baking sheet in a single layer and bake until softened, about 10 minutes. They should be pliable. Set aside to cool. They should be cool enough to comfortably handle before placing on the puff pastry.
  • Do not turn the oven off.
  • Use 1 tablespoon of the butter to grease the muffin tray. Set aside.
  • Mix together the coconut sugar and the remaining ½ teaspoon cinnamon, and nutmeg in a bowl. Set aside.
  • On a lightly floured counter, roll pastry into 12 by 10-inch rectangle with short side parallel towards yourself.
  • Brush the puff pastry with apricot preserves. Sprinkle it with coconut sugar-cinnamon-nutmeg mixture.
  • Using a pizza wheel or a knife, cut pastry lengthwise into 6 strips. Each strip should be 10 by 2-inches. * Watch the quick video above for a visual on this.*
  • Working one strip at a time, place 10-12 slices of apples, peel side out, overlapping each other, leaving 1 inch border of dough along the bottom. Fold the bottom inch of dough onto the apples, leaving top of apple slices exposed. Using the rest of the butter, lightly brush the bottom pastry and roll dough into a pinwheel. Place in the muffin pan apple side up.
  • Continue with the rest of the sheets..
  • Bake until golden brown for 40-45 minutes, rotating the muffin pan halfway through the baking process.
  • Remove the apple roses from the muffin pan on a wire rack and let them cool for 10 minutes.
  • Serve.

2 apples * (any apple will work, though I typically use Fuji or Gala)
1 tablespoon honey
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
8 mint leaves, for garnish (optional, basil and sage also work well)

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 400 degrees F
  • Wash and dry apples
  • Peel and core apples
  • Cut apples in half
  • Uniformly slice apples into thin strips
  • Transfer sliced apples to baking sheet lined with parchment paper or silicon baking liner
  • Microwave honey in a small dish for 20 seconds. Add cinnamon and mix until combined
  • Using a pastry brush (or back of spoon), coat sliced apples in honey cinnamon mixture
  • Bake in oven for 20 minutes at 400°F and then cool for 5 to 10 minutes on baking sheet
  • Once cool, use your fingers and gently squeeze sliced apples to create a long strip. Ensure that apple slices are evenly distributed
  • Gently roll apple slice strip into a tight spiral
  • Transfer apple roses to a serving dish
  • Garnish with mint or basil leaves (optional). Honey apple roses can be served right away or refrigerated up to overnight. They are delicious served cold or at room temperature
  • If you prefer the look of a more open rose, you can gently press the apple petals starting from the middle and working out

1 puff pastry sheet
2 medium apple (sweet red)
juice from 2 limes
cinnamon
brown sugar
flour
powdered sugar for dusting

Steps:

  • Thaw puff pastry
  • Pre heat oven to 390 F and cut out rectangles from the baking paper.
  • Cut apples in half, core and cut into thin slices.
  • Place slices in a microwave bowl and sprinkle lime juice. Mix well.
  • Place in microwave and keep on high for about 2 1/2 minutes or until apple slices are soft enough to be rolled (experiment first as microwave ovens have different settings).
  • Strain apples through a fine sieve and discard juice
  • On a floured surface, roll out the pastry sheet until half thin.
  • Using a pastry or pizza wheel, divide in strips, about 4" wide.
  • Place one strip on the counter and line apple slices along one side of the strip, overlapping one another. The top (skin side) of the slices should stick out a little.
  • Using a teaspoon, sprinkle cinnamon and brown sugar.
  • Fold up the bottom part of the strip.
  • Starting from one end, carefully roll the dough, keeping the apple slices in place.
  • Place in the baking paper rectangles then place in a regular muffin cup.
  • Bake for about 25 minutes or until pastry is golden.
  • Dust with powdered sugar - optional.

2 large red apples
3 tablespoons apricot preserves
1 (17 ounce) box of puffy pastry dough
2 1/2 tablespoons granulated sugar

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Butter 10 cups in a standard 12-cup muffin tin. Set aside.
  • In a medium pot, combine 8 cups water and lemon juice. Bring to a boil over high-heat and reduce to a brisk simmer.
  • Cut the apples in half. Remove core and cut apples crosswise into paper-thin slices. Transfer slices to simmering acidulated water. Cook until slices bend easily, about 3-4 minutes. They be soft enough to bend but not break when rolled. Drain and transfer to a plate or small baking sheet.
  • Combine apricot preserves and 2 tablespoons water in a small bowl. If apricot preserves is very firm, transfer to microwave and heat gently, stirring at 15-second intervals, until mixture is well-combined and smooth. Set aside to cool.
  • On a lightly floured work surface, roll pastry to 16" x 10", with the long side parallel to the bottom edge of the work surface. Using a pizza cutter, cut dough in half vertically, and then horizontally, at 2-inch intervals. You should have ten 2" x 8" strips.
  • Brush one strip with apricot mixture. Arrange apple slices, round side up, on top portion of dough strip, slightly overlapping one another. Each slice should look like an upside-down U, with its rounded, skin-on edge sticking out over the top edge of the dough. Fold the bottom half of the dough up to meet the top half, and press lightly to seal.
  • Starting from one end, carefully roll dough, keeping the apple slices in place. Seal the edge at the end with apricot mixture, and place into prepared muffin tin. Repeat with remaining strips. Sprinkle granulated sugar on top of each rose, about ¾ teaspoon each.
  • Transfer muffin tin to oven and bake until golden and pastry is cooked through, about 50 minutes. Carefully remove roses and let cool on a rack before serving.

  • Roll out puff pastry - enough to make 6 strips 3 inches wide. Mix apricot jam with 2 tbsp water. Spread along centre of puff pastry.
  • Place apple slices along the top of the strip, slightly overlapping. Sprinkle over some cinnamon. Fold over the bottom of the pastry.

1 pound ground beef
1 large onion, chopped
1 can (6 ounces) tomato paste
3 teaspoons chili powder
3 teaspoons smoked paprika

2 tablespoons cider vinegar
3 cups beef broth
2 large Granny Smith apples, peeled and chopped
1 can (15 ounces) chili beans, undrained
