An old recipe of my grandmother's; my mother and grandfather love it on spice cake. Grandma's recipe card says that this frosting is similar to a banana-frosted spice cake A&P used to sell back in the very early 70s.

2 cups confectioners' sugar, sifted
2 tablespoons milk
3 drops food coloring, or as needed

Steps:

  • Cream room temperature butter with a hand mixer, the paddle attachment of a stand mixer, or a wooden spoon until smooth and fluffy. Gradually beat in confectioners' sugar until fully incorporated. Beat in vanilla extract.
  • Pour in milk and beat for an additional 3 to 4 minutes. Add food coloring, if using, and beat for thirty seconds until smooth or until desired color is reached.

  • Mix in clear vanilla extract, almond extract or a similar flavoring to taste, using about 1 teaspoon of flavoring per pound of confectioner's sugar.
  • Add the confectioner's sugar to the mixing bowl in small batches until all of the sugar is thoroughly incorporated with the butter or shortening.
