Easy Ham with Cherry Sauce image

In Taylors, South Carolina, Carol Lee Jones often fixes this delicious ham topped with a thick cherry sauce. "It's such a favorite that I've served it at Easter dinners, church breakfasts and a friend's wedding brunch," she writes.

1 boneless fully cooked ham (3 to 4 pounds)
1/2 cup apple jelly
2 teaspoons prepared mustard
2/3 cup ginger ale, divided
1 can (21 ounces) cherry pie filling
2 tablespoons cornstarch

Steps:

  • Score surface of ham, making diamond shapes 1/2 in. deep. In a small bowl, combine the jelly, mustard and 1 tablespoon ginger ale; rub over scored surface of ham. Cut ham in half; place in a 5-qt. slow cooker. Cover and cook on low for 4-5 hours or until a thermometer reads 140°, basting with cooking juices near the end of cooking time., For sauce, place pie filling in a saucepan. Combine cornstarch and remaining ginger ale; stir into pie filling until blended. Bring to a boil; cook and stir for 2 minutes or until thickened. Serve over ham.

1 fully cooked bone-in ham (6 to 8 pounds)
1 cup packed brown sugar
3 tablespoons maple syrup
1 teaspoon ground mustard
3 tablespoons cornstarch
1/2 cup sugar
1 cup cold water
1 can (15 ounces) pitted dark sweet cherries, undrained
2 tablespoons lemon juice
1 teaspoon almond extract

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 325°. Place ham on a rack in a roasting pan. Using a sharp knife, score surface of ham with 1/4-in.-deep cuts in a diamond pattern. Mix brown sugar, syrup and mustard; rub over ham and press into cuts. Bake, covered, until a thermometer reads 140°, 1-3/4 to 2 hours., In a small saucepan, mix cornstarch, sugar and water until smooth. Add cherries; bring to a boil. Cook and stir until thickened, 1-2 minutes. Remove from heat; stir in lemon juice and almond extract. Serve warm with ham.

My family doesn't like turkey, so I was trying to come up with a new way to glaze ham other than the old brown sugar or pineapple glaze. Pieced together a few recipes, did some experimenting, and came out with this. Very tasty!

1/2 cup milk
1/3 cup dry breadcrumbs
1/2 teaspoon onion powder
1/4 teaspoon pepper
1 lb fully cooked ground ham
1/2 lb ground turkey
1/2 cup cherry preserves
1 tablespoon cider vinegar
1/8 teaspoon ground cloves

Steps:

  • In a bowl combine the first 5 ingredients. Crumble ham and turkey over mixture and mix together well.
  • Press into greased 9 x 5 x 3-inch loaf pan. Bake uncovered at 375°F for 50 to 55 minutes or until meat thermometer reads 160°F.
  • In a saucepan combine sauce ingredients; cook and stir over medium heat for 5 minutes or until heated through. Serve with ham loaf.

1/8 teaspoon cinnamon
5 teaspoons cornstarch
1/8 teaspoon nutmeg
1/2 cup sugar
1/8 teaspoon allspice
2 tablespoons white vinegar
1/2 cup rose wine (optional)

Steps:

  • Place ham slices in baking dish.
  • Drain cherries and reserve syrup.
  • Combine cherry syrup in saucepan with cornstarch, sugar, vinegar, water and spices.
  • Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until thick and clear.
  • Add wine and cherries.
  • Pour over ham slices and bake at 350F 45 minutes.

1 ½ cups soft bread crumbs
½ teaspoon ground mustard
1 pound ground fully cooked ham
½ pound ground pork
¼ cup packed brown sugar
1 teaspoon prepared mustard
2 tablespoons cornstarch
½ cup sugar
1 (16 ounce) can pitted red cherries, undrained
1 dash red food coloring

Steps:

  • In a bowl, combine egg, bread crumbs and ground mustard. Add ham and pork; mix well. Shape into eight equal portions; pat lightly into 2-3/4-in. muffin cups. Combine brown sugar and prepared mustard; sprinkle over cups. Bake at 350 degrees F for 40 minutes or until no longer pink.
  • For sauce, combine cornstarch and sugar in a saucepan. Add cherries; cook and stir over medium-high heat until thickened and bubbly. Cook and stir 2 minutes longer. If desired, stir in 4-5 drops food coloring. Serve over ham cups.
