OLD FASHIONED COCONUT DROPS

Steps:

• Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). Grease cookie sheets.
• Combine flour and margarine in a medium size mixing bowl. Mix in sugar, cinnamon and baking powder. Stir the egg into the mixture. Once the egg is well incorporated stir in the coconut, raisins and vanilla. Drop the dough in rough heaps the size of an egg onto cookie sheets.
• Bake 8 minutes or until lightly browned.

OLD-FASHIONED HOT CHOCOLATE RECIPE FROM THE 19TH CENTURY

Steps:

• Heat a cup of water until it is nearly at a boil.
• Add the square of chocolate and stir well, letting the chocolate melt and simmer in the hot water for a few minutes.
• Then add in the amount of sugar or other sweeteners that you like and any milk or cream that you may want.
• Pour the hot chocolate into your favorite cup or mug and add a pinch of nutmeg or other spices if you like.
• (An optional step if you want a froth on top would be to pour the chocolate back and forth from the pot to the cup several times from a height to create that foam or to which the chocolate while it is in the pot before pouring it into your cup.)

OLD FASHIONED DROP COOKIES

Steps:

• Cream together sugar, shortening, eggs and vanilla. Add all dry ingredients and mix thoroughly. At this point stir in your favorite candy, chocolate chips, nuts, candied fruit, raisins or anything you would like to use.
• Drop by teaspoonfuls on greased cookie sheet and bake at 375 degrees for 10 to 12 minutes.

OLD FASHIONED CHOCOLATE CAKE

Steps:

• Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease and flour a 9x13 inch pan. In a saucepan, melt 1 cup of butter. Stir in 1 cup water and 4 tablespoons cocoa powder. Remove from heat and set aside.
• In a medium bowl, dissolve the baking soda in 1/2 cup of buttermilk. Stir in the eggs and vanilla. Mix in the cooled cocoa mixture.
• In a large bowl, sift together the flour, sugar, cinnamon and salt. Make a well in the center and pour in the cocoa buttermilk mixture. Stir until blended. Pour batter into prepared pan. Bake in the preheated oven for 30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean. Ice the cake with Buttermilk Pecan Icing while it's still warm.
• For the icing: In a large saucepan, melt 1/2 cup butter with 4 tablespoons cocoa. Stir in 1/3 cup buttermilk, and heat until almost boiling. Stir in confectioners' sugar, vanilla, salt and pecans. Remove from heat. Mix well and pour over warm cake.
