For a cinnamon-sugar classic cookie, bake Trisha Yearwood's soft and chewy Snickerdoodles recipe from Food Network.

Provided by Trisha Yearwood

Categories     dessert

Time 35m

Yield about 4 dozen

Number Of Ingredients 9

1/2 cup salted butter, softened
1/2 cup vegetable shortening
1 1/2 cups plus 2 tablespoons sugar
2 medium eggs
2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons cream of tartar
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon fine salt
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F.
  • In a large bowl, combine the butter, shortening, 1 1/2 cups sugar and the eggs and mix thoroughly with an electric mixer on medium speed until creamy and well combined, 1 to 2 minutes. Sift together the flour, cream of tartar, baking soda and salt, and stir into the shortening mixture.
  • In a small bowl, stir together the remaining 2 tablespoons sugar with the cinnamon.
  • Shape the dough into 1 1/2-inch balls (1 tablespoon per ball), and roll each ball in the cinnamon-sugar. Arrange the dough balls 2 inches apart on ungreased cookie sheets. Bake two sheets at a time until the edges of the cookies are set but the centers are still soft, 8 to 10 minutes, rotating the sheets halfway through. Transfer the cookies to wire racks for cooling. Repeat with the remaining dough balls. Store in an airtight container.

OLD-FASHIONED SNICKERDOODLES

Old-Fashioned Snickerdoodles image

I searched long and hard for a truly satisfying snickerdoodle recipe. A friend gave me this recipe years ago. I tried it and found that it was exactly what I was looking for. I hope all of you enjoy it as much as I have.

Provided by OwlMonkey

Categories     Drop Cookies

Time 19m

Yield 25 cookies

Number Of Ingredients 9

1/2 cup butter, softened
1 cup sugar
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar
1 egg
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
2 tablespoons sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Steps:

  • Beat softened butter until creamy. Add your 1 cup sugar, baking soda and cream of tartar; mixing together. Beat egg and vanilla into the mixture. Slowly add the flour until entirely combined. At this point if you can manage to wait long enough, let the dough sit in the fridge for at least a half an hour. This step isn't absolutely necessary but it allows the dough to firm up so that it's easier to work with.
  • Stir together the 1 teaspoons cinnamon and 2 tablespoons sugar. Shape the dough into small balls and coat with your cinnamon/sugar mixture. Place a few inches apart on an ungreased cookie sheet. Bake in a preheated 375°F oven for 9 - 11 minutes (depending on how hot your oven runs). The recipe recommends taking them out of the oven when the edges are golden, but they are especially delicious slightly underbaked. They will be cool enough to eat in no time at all.

Top Asked Questions

How do you make snickerdoodles?
Snickerdoodles: In a large bowl whisk the flour with the baking soda, cream of tartar, and salt. In the bowl of your electric stand mixer, fitted with the paddle attachment (or with a hand mixer), beat the butter until smooth.
What do old fashioned snickerdoodles taste like?
Old-fashioned snickerdoodles are chewy sugar cookies coated in a cinnamon-sugar mixture. The batter is basic and easy to make. While some recipes use shortening as the fat, I like the taste of pure butter in my cookies.
What is a Snickerdoodle Cookie?
Some people think that a snickerdoodle cookie is just a big sugar cookie covered in cinnamon sugar but true snickerdoodle lovers know that they are so much more! True snickerdoodles are made with cream of tartar which reacts with the baking soda and gives these cookies their classic tangy flavor and soft texture.
How long do you bake snickerdoodles for?
Bake the snickerdoodles in batches for about 8 or 9 minutes for soft cookies, or about 11 minutes for firmer, crisper cookies. Cream of tartar gives snickerdoodles their characteristic tanginess. If you don't have cream of tartar, omit both the cream of tartar and baking soda and replace them with 2 teaspoons of baking powder.
