ORANGE BLOSSOM GIN FIZZ



Orange Blossom Gin Fizz image

This cocktail relies on raw egg white to create a foamy top. Feel free to leave this out and substitute with a touch of whipping cream.

Provided by Maureen Abood

Number Of Ingredients 6

Juice of 1/2 lemon
1 tablespoon granulated sugar
1 egg white
2 oz. gin
2 dashes (or 1/8 teaspoon) orange blossom water
chilled soda water

Steps:

  • Using a cocktail shaker with both the strainer and solid top, fill the cocktail shaker 2/3 full with ice. Add all of the ingredients except the chilled soda water. Secure the top onto the shaker and shake the shaker as hard as you can for thirty seconds. Change hands and shake again for thirty more seconds. If you're using a pasteurized egg white, take a deep breath and shake again for thirty seconds (pasteurized egg whites take longer to foam up than unpasteurized).
  • Strain into a cocktail coupe (you may need to remove the shaker top and spoon the foam onto the top of the drink) and top with chilled soda water. Serve immediately.

10 tablespoons Grand Marnier or other orange liqueur, chilled
10 tablespoons mandarin-flavored vodka (such as Absolut Mandarin), chilled
2 1/2 teaspoons orange flower water*
5 cups Champagne or sparkling wine (from two 750-ml bottles), chilled
10 orange peel strips (optional)

Steps:

  • Pour 1 tablespoon orange juice, 1 tablespoon Grand Marnier, and 1 tablespoon vodka into each of 10 Champagne flutes. For each drink, stir in 1/4 teaspoon orange flower water and fill with 1/2 cup Champagne. Garnish drinks with orange strips, if desired.
  • A flavoring extract available at liquor stores and in the liquor or specialty foods section of some supermarkets.

20 cups water
1 bunch fresh mint (about 1 cup)
1 cup sugar
1 large navel orange
1 to 2 tablespoons orange blossom water or 1-1/2 to 2-1/2 teaspoons orange extract
Optional: Orange slices and additional fresh mint

Steps:

  • Place water and mint in a 6-qt. slow cooker. Cover and cook on high for 6 hours or until heated through. Strain tea; discard mint., Whisk in sugar until dissolved. Cut orange crosswise in half; squeeze juice from orange. Stir in juice and orange blossom water. Transfer to a pitcher. Refrigerate until cold, 4-6 hours. Serve over ice with orange slices and additional mint if desired.

Citrus-blossom syrup
2 cups water
2 cups sugar
1 tablespoon loosely packed fresh lemon verbena leaves (optional)
1 orange
1 lemon
2 teaspoons orange-flower water*
Drinks
6 cups ice cubes, divided
1/2 cup gin, divided
1/2 cup whipping cream, divided
4 large egg whites, divided
4 tablespoons lemon juice, divided
Freshly ground nutmeg
Fresh lemon verbena sprigs (optional)

Steps:

  • For syrup:
  • Mix 2 cups water, sugar, and lemon verbena, if desired, in medium saucepan. Using vegetable peeler, remove peel (colored part) from orange and lemon; add peel to saucepan. Bring sugar mixture to boil, stirring until sugar dissolves. Reduce heat to medium and simmer 5 minutes. Cool completely. Stir in orange-flower water. (Can be made 2 weeks ahead. Cover and refrigerate.)
  • For drinks:
  • Combine 6 tablespoons syrup, 3 cups ice, 1/4 cup gin, 1/4 cup cream, 2 egg whites, and 2 tablespoons lemon juice in blender. Blend until smooth and foamy. Divide among 4 glasses. Repeat with 6 tablespoons syrup and remaining ice, gin, cream, egg whites, and juice. Sprinkle drinks with nutmeg; garnish with lemon verbena sprigs, if desired.
  • **Market tip:**Lemon verbena is sold at nurseries and some farmers' markets. *A flavoring extract; available in the liquor aisle or baking section of some supermarkets and at liquor stores.
