Found this recipe online and tweaked it a little to make it "more orangey." It's very easy and so good! The scones come out with a wonderful texture.

Time 30m

Yield 8

Number Of Ingredients 16

cooking spray
1 ⅓ cups all-purpose flour
2 tablespoons white sugar, divided
½ teaspoon baking soda
¼ teaspoon baking powder
¼ teaspoon salt
½ stick cold unsalted butter, cubed
2 ½ tablespoons orange zest
6 tablespoons orange juice
1 medium egg
1 ½ tablespoons white vinegar
1 tablespoon milk, or as needed
½ cup confectioners' sugar
2 tablespoons confectioners' sugar
4 teaspoons orange juice
1 tablespoon orange zest

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C). Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil and grease with cooking spray.
  • Mix flour, 1 tablespoon sugar, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Cut in butter using a pastry cutter. Mix in orange zest.
  • Make a well in the center of the flour mixture. Whisk orange juice, egg, and vinegar together and pour into the flour mixture. Stir until moistened and sticky.
  • Transfer dough to a floured surface and knead gently about 10 times. Pat into a 6x8-inch rectangle. Cut rectangle into 4 squares; cut each square diagonally into 8 triangles. Arrange scones on the prepared baking sheet. Brush tops with milk and sprinkle with remaining 1 tablespoon sugar.
  • Bake in the preheated oven until golden brown, about 10 minutes.
  • Make the orange glaze while the scones are baking. Mix 1/2 cup plus 2 tablespoons confectioners' sugar and orange juice until thick and smooth; glaze should drip slowly off the back of a spoon. Mix in orange zest.
  • Dunk warm scones in the glaze to fully coat the tops. Let stand for 5 minutes before serving.

Categories     Scones

Time 40m

Number Of Ingredients 15

2 cups all-purpose flour
1/3 cup sugar
1 Tbsp baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 Tbsp orange zest, about the zest of 1 large orange
1/2 cup cubed butter, cold
1 large egg
1/4 cup sour cream
1/4 cup heavy cream, plus more for brushing
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
3 Tbsp butter, melted
1-1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
2 Tbsp freshly squeezed orange juice
1 tsp orange zest (optional--it makes the glaze extra orange-flavored!)

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 400 degrees and line a baking sheet with parchment paper (or spray with cooking oil).
  • Mix together flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and orange zest. Cut in cold butter with a pastry cutter (or using a standing mixer) and mix the dough until the butter is about the size of peas, and the dough resembles coarse crumbs. Set aside.
  • In a small bowl, whisk egg, sour cream, heavy cream, and vanilla extract. Mix with the dry ingredients and stir until just combined.
  • Turn the dough out onto a floured surface, and pat into a 1" thick circle. Cut into 8 triangles. Place scones on parchment lined baking tray, making sure the scones are evenly spaced apart.
  • Brush the tops of each scone with a little bit of heavy cream, and bake for 15-16 minutes, or until scones are golden brown.
  • While the scones are cooling, mix together melted butter, powdered sugar (starting with 1 cup), vanilla extract, orange juice, and orange zest. If the glaze seems too thin, add in the last 1/2 cup of powdered sugar.
  • Pour the glaze over the scones and enjoy!

ORANGE-CRANBERRY SCONES

Orange-Cranberry Scones image

My wife is very picky about the consistency and flavor of scones and these are her all-time favorites, beating out all the high-end bakery scones she's had. In particular, she likes that they have great flavor and are very light and flaky. I've made variations of these substituting all the orange and cranberries and adding chocolate chips and water and the kids gobble them up.

Provided by ldonny

Time 50m

Yield 16

Number Of Ingredients 16

¼ cup orange juice
¼ cup water
1 cup dried cranberries
2 cups rolled oats
3 cups all-purpose flour
3 tablespoons white sugar
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup unsalted butter, cubed
1 ⅓ cups cold milk
1 large orange, zested
2 tablespoons natural (raw) sugar
1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese
½ cup powdered sugar, or as needed
¼ cup orange juice

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
  • Heat 1/4 cup orange juice and water in a small pan over medium-low heat; add cranberries. Simmer the mixture for 1 minute, then remove from the heat and let sit until it cools slightly.
  • Grind oats with flour, 3 tablespoons sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a food processor or blender. Add butter. Run the machine in short spurts until the mixture has the consistency of sand. Transfer the mixture to a large mixing bowl.
  • Add milk, 1/2 of the orange zest, and the orange-cranberry mixture to the large mixing bowl. Stir until the mixture begins to hold together.
  • Form the dough into a large ball with your hands, adding a bit of milk if necessary. Press or roll out the ball of dough until it is 1 inch thick. Cut the dough into 16 squares or triangles. Sprinkle with the remaining zest and raw sugar. Place on an ungreased baking sheet.
  • Bake scones in the preheated oven until they are lightly browned on the edges, about 20 minutes.
  • While the scones are baking, whip cream cheese, 1/2 cup powdered sugar, and orange juice together to make the topping. If the topping is too thin, thicken with additional powdered sugar.
  • Frost the scones and serve warm.
