Milk, for serving (optional)

Steps:

  • Combine 1/2 pound coffee grounds with 6 cups cold water in a large pitcher or glass jar. Let stand 5 minutes.

COLD-BREW COFFEE

Cold-Brew Coffee image

Cold brewing reduces the acidity of coffee, which enhances its natural sweetness and complex flavors. Even those who take hot coffee with sugar and cream might find themselves sipping cold brew plain. -Taste of Home Test Kitchen

COLD-BREWED ICED COFFEE

Cold-Brewed Iced Coffee image

Cold-brewed coffee is actually dirt simple to make at home using a Mason jar and a sieve. You just add water to coffee, stir, cover it and leave it out on the counter overnight. A quick two-step filtering the next day (strain the grounds through a sieve, and use a coffee filter to pick up silt), a dilution of the brew one-to-one with water, and you're done. Except for the time it sits on the kitchen counter, the whole process takes about five minutes.

Yield Two drinks

Number Of Ingredients 2

1/3 cup ground coffee (medium-coarse grind is best)
Milk (optional)

Steps:

  • In a jar, stir together coffee and 1 1/2 cups cold water. Cover and let rest at room temperature overnight or 12 hours
  • Strain twice through a coffee filter, a fine-mesh sieve or a sieve lined with cheesecloth. In a tall glass filled with ice, mix equal parts coffee concentrate and water, or to taste. If desired, add milk.

COLD BREW COFFEE

Cold Brew Coffee image

Let's make cold brew coffee! It's easy to make, and it's so nice to have coffee ready to go. This recipe is written for a 1-quart wide-mouth mason jar; you can scale it up or down using 1 ounce* (28 grams) coffee per 1 cup water. The quantities provided will produce about 2 1/2 cups concentrate, which is enough for 5 cups of cold brew.

Provided by Cookie and Kate

Categories     Drink

Time 20m

Number Of Ingredients 2

3 ounces (85 grams) coarsely-ground coffee (that's about 3/4 cup whole coffee beans turned into about 1 1/2 cups* coarsely-ground coffee)
3 cups water (filtered water if you have it)

Steps:

  • In a 1-quart wide-mouth mason jar, combine the coffee and water. Stir to combine. I like to let my mixture rest for about 5 minutes and stir it again; the coffee grounds seem to gain more water exposure this way.
  • Put a lid on your container and refrigerate it for 12 to 18 hours.
  • When you're ready to strain your cold brew, place a thin paper coffee filter or a small, thin cotton napkin, cloth or handkerchief over a small fine-mesh sieve. Pour the concentrate through the prepared sieve into a liquid measuring cup or pitcher. Let it rest for a few minutes to let the last of the cold brew trickle down.
  • To serve, fill a glass with ice and fill it halfway with water. Then fill the rest of the glass with cold brew concentrate, and stir to combine. Cold brew concentrate will keep well in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks, although I find that it has the best flavor within the first week.

HOW TO MAKE COLD BREW COFFEE

How To Make Cold Brew Coffee image

Make cold brew coffee at home! It's so easy, and your iced coffee will never taste watery or bitter again.

Provided by Emma Christensen

Categories     Drink     How To     Make-ahead

Time 12h10m

Number Of Ingredients 2

1 cup (113 grams) whole coffee beans
4 cups (907 grams) water

Steps:

  • Coarsely grind the coffee Grind the coffee beans on the coarsest setting on your grinder , or in short 1-second pulses in a spice grinder. The grounds should look like coarse cornmeal, not fine powder. You should have just under 1 cup of grounds.
  • Combine the coffee and the water Transfer the coffee grounds to the container you're using to make the cold brew. Pour the water over top. Stir gently with a long-handled spoon to make sure the grounds are thoroughly saturated with water.
  • Steep overnight Cover the jar with a lid or a small plate to protect it from dust and bugs. Let the coffee steep for about 12 hours. The coffee can be left on the counter or refrigerated; steeping time is the same.
  • Strain the coffee Line a small strainer with cheesecloth or flour sack cloth and place over a large measuring cup or bowl. Pour the coffee through the strainer.
  • Store the coffee Transfer the coffee to a small bottle or jar and store in the fridge for up to a week.
  • Serve the coffee Dilute the coffee with as much water or milk as you prefer. Serve over ice or warm for a few minutes in the microwave.

  • Fill your bag to the top with coarse coffee grounds. Some helpful tips to ensure you fill your bag properly include:
  • Put the sealed bag in your container and fill it with room temperature or cold filtered water. No fancy pouring technique required, just make sure all the coffee is submerged. To stop the coffee from oxidizing (thus, picking up stale flavors) during the brewing process, tightly cover your container and keep it out of direct sunlight. This is especially important, because hotter temperatures speed up oxidation and the brewing process, potentially leaving you with bitter flavors.
  • Cold brew coffee requires a certain amount of patience (or at least forethought). Wait 12 to 18 hours; longer brew times will yield a richer concentrate, but steeping it more than 18 hours could cause bitter flavors. Because cold water extracts slower than hot water, you’ll need that time to get flavor into your brew. Our cold brew bags make cleanup no more difficult than your tea brewing process. Just remove the bag — no need to strain — and discard or commercially compost it (along with your coffee grounds).
  • Your cold brew is ready! With our recipe, the coffee you brewed will be strong enough that ice, milk, or dairy substitute won’t dilute the taste too much. If the concentrate feels like it’s too strong, add water to taste. Because our cold brew is brewed as a concentrate, it stands up to other ingredients, like those in a [cocktail or mocktail recipe](https://www.drinktrade.com/blog/culture), too. If you’re not planning to drink it right away, keep any leftover concentrate you brewed in your refrigerator for up to a week.
