- Chili Powder Mix. You can (and should) adjust the cayenne pepper to taste. Stir in half of the amount below, taste it and then add the rest a little at a time, tasting after each addition before adding more.
- Taco Seasoning Mix. Use three tablespoons of this taco seasoning per pound of ground beef. The cayenne pepper is optional. 1/4 cup instant minced onion. 2 tablespoons chili powder.
- Everything Bagel Seasoning. One of the most iconic flavor profiles ever, this seasoning blend has everything you love about an everything bagel—without the bagel.
- Pumpkin Spice Seasoning. No, it's not just for making pumpkin spice lattes, but yes, you can definitely use it for that—you know you're going to. Other possibilities include using it to season roasted vegetables, swirl it into muffins or pancake batter, or, of course, for making pumpkin pie.
- Curry Powder Mix. There are about a thousand ways you can make curry powder, using a thousand different ingredients. This one is a flavorful Thai version, which is quite mild.
- Dry Rub for BBQ. This is a classic dry rub that will work equally well on beef, pork or chicken: 1/3 cup paprika. 1/4 cup sugar. 2 tablespoons black pepper. 2 tablespoons salt.
- Poultry Seasoning Mix. This aromatic poultry seasoning can go on a whole chicken before roasting it, or on chicken pieces that are going to be roasted. Use it just like you'd use a dry rub.
- Homemade Seasoned Salt. Another all-purpose seasoning that will go with anything savory: hamburgers, chicken breasts, grilled vegetables, even soups and broths.

- Optional: Crush the cumin seeds with a rolling pin or in a mortar pestle. The idea here is to release their flavor and volatile oils. You don't need to make a fine powder.
- Then reduce the flame and simmer for 5 minutes. Bring this to a boil again on a slightly higher heat and turn off.

- Whole coriander or ground coriander. Coriander is the seed of the cilantro plant, which is also in the parsley family. It has a similar bright, lemony and earthy flavor profile, but coriander is milder than cumin when it comes to smokiness and heat.
- Caraway seeds. Caraway and cumin seeds look almost identical, probably because caraway is yet another member of the parsley family. It tastes close to cumin but isn’t as strong.
- Fennel seeds. Yep, another member of the parsley family. Fennel seeds can replace cumin if you’re in desperate need. They do have a licorice flavor that cumin lacks, so keep that in mind if that’s not something you want in your dish.
- Garam masala. This spice blend is found in Indian and South African cooking, and while the exact spices vary from blend to blend, cumin is usually included.
- Curry powder. Like garam masala, curry powder typically contains cumin, so it’s a good substitute for the spice. However, it also contains other flavors you might not want in your recipe, so consider what you’re cooking before substituting.
- Chili powder. Chili powder also features cumin, among other spices like garlic powder and oregano. Keep in mind that it can bring intense spiciness to what you’re cooking, so start with half as much chili powder as cumin and adjust from there.
- Paprika. Like cumin, paprika is smoky and earthy. But it’s not as citrusy or bright, so start with a small amount and season as you go. Like curry powder, it will color your food if you use large quantities—but this time red instead of yellow.
