  • Pickling. This recipe from the good folks at Serious Eats makes delicious quick-pickled cucumbers that are great on pulled pork sandwiches or as a snack.
  • Sushi Rice. Rice wine vinegar is an essential ingredient in the preparation of sushi rice that gives it its distinctive flavor. Get the recipe here.
  • Marinades. You could theoretically substitute rice wine vinegar for any other vinegar in marinade recipes, but it compliments Asian flavor profiles the best.
  • Cocktails. Adding rice wine vinegar to cocktails is a great way to give them a lift of brightness. Rice wine vinegar and cucumbers play really well together, creating subtle, refreshing flavor infusions.
  • On French Fries. Taking a cue from our British and Canadian friends who had the genius idea to flavor their fries with malt vinegar, if you want a less punchy flavor, or if you simply don't have malt vinegar in the pantry, save a trip to the store and go with rice wine vinegar.
  • Stir-Fries. For a quick, healthy dinner with a lot of flavors, stir-fry some veggies and make a basic sauce with chicken broth, rice wine vinegar, soy sauce, and a little sugar.
  • Dipping Sauces. Soy sauce and rice wine vinegar team up again with some help from their friend sesame oil to create a delicious dipping sauce for pot-stickers, sushi, chicken, egg rolls, or really anything.
  • Salad Dressings. Remember when I said red wine vinegar is perfect for vinaigrettes? It is. But so is rice wine vinegar, if you want to tone down the acidity a bit.
  • Washing Your Whites. For a natural cleaner that makes your whites bright, clean, and soft, try adding five drops of lemon essential oil to two cups of rice wine vinegar and using that instead of laundry detergent or bleach.
  • Facial Toner. Rice vinegar pairs with distilled water and tea tree oil to create a facial toner that nourishes your skin without stripping it of any natural necessities.

THE 6 BEST SUBSTITUTES FOR RICE VINEGAR

  • White Wine Vinegar. White wine vinegar is made through the fermentation of white wine into vinegar. It has a mild, slightly acidic taste that makes it an excellent addition to salad dressings and sauces.
  • Apple Cider Vinegar. Apple cider vinegar is a type of vinegar made from apple cider that has undergone fermentation. With its mild taste and just a hint of apple flavor, apple cider vinegar makes a good substitute for just about any type of vinegar.
  • Lemon or Lime Juice. If you’re using rice vinegar to add a bit of zing to recipes like salad dressings, slaws or sauces, you can easily swap it out for a bit of lemon or lime juice.
  • Champagne Vinegar. Champagne vinegar is made by fermenting champagne to produce vinegar with a light and delicate flavor. Because it has a very mild taste, it can be used in place of rice vinegar in any recipe, and provides a subtle flavor that won’t overpower the final product.
  • Seasoned Rice Vinegar. Seasoned rice vinegar is made by adding sugar and salt to regular rice vinegar. By making a few simple adjustments to your recipe, you can easily substitute seasoned rice vinegar for regular rice vinegar in your favorite recipes.
  • Sherry Vinegar. Sherry vinegar is a type of wine vinegar made from sherry. It has a distinct flavor often described as rich, nutty and slightly sweet.

10 BEST SUBSTITUTES FOR RICE WINE VINEGAR

From mashed.com
  • White wine vinegar. It's probably little surprise that arguably the best one-for-one way to replace rice wine vinegar is with white wine vinegar. While sourced from grapes, this vinegar has a similar acidity to its rice-derived counterpart, albeit with a bit less sweetness, but if needed, you can compensate for that as needed with other ingredients.
  • Apple cider vinegar. Apple cider vinegar is a great stand-in for rice wine vinegar if need be. It can be used in place of its rice-based buddy in marinades, sauces, dressings, and more, and is even suitable for use with sushi and other foodstuffs you might think demand rice vinegar (via Healthline).
  • Champagne vinegar. According to Stonesoup, champagne vinegar is a great substitute for rice wine vinegar because it's not as strong as other wine-based vinegars.
  • Sherry vinegar. If it's the blend of sweet acidity you're after, PureWow explains that sherry vinegar is a great swap if you've found you're out of rice vinegar.
  • Lemon juice (or lime juice) Lemon and lime juice pack plenty of acidity, and that acidity is a major component in the flavor you want from your rice wine vinegar, thus these citrus juices can stand in for the vinegar in a pinch.
  • Rice wine. Rice wine can be used as a stand-in for rice wine vinegar with a number of caveats. First, note that some rice wines are sweet, some are milky in appearance, and others are quite strong in alcohol content.
  • Balsamic vinegar. Thick, syrupy balsamic vinegar is a poor substitute for rice vinegar and is frankly best left unused; the recipe will simply have to make due without vinegar.
  • White wine. A splash of white wine can be used to replace rice wine vinegar in a pinch, and note that, going the other way, light vinegars can be worthy step-ins for wine in your cooking as well.
  • Chicken broth. Chicken broth is commonly used interchangeably with white wine in cooking, especially for broths and soups. To replace rice wine vinegar with chicken broth means you need a decidedly potent broth, given the intensity of rice vinegar compared to white wine.
  • White vinegar. Make no mistake about it, on its own, white vinegar is not a great substitute for rice wine vinegar. It's much stronger of a flavor and should be blended with white wine, chicken or vegetable broth, or even a dash of citrus and some water to add complexity and cut the harshness.

RICE WINE VINEGAR – AMERICAN VINEGAR WORKS
The California Junmai Rice Wine Vinegar is simply slow fermented and aged in old rye whiskey barrels. The Montmorency Cherry Rice Wine Vinegar uses the same sake but is co-fermented with tart cherries—this is what it would be like if red wine and rice wine vinegars had a baby. It does not take like cherries, it just picks up the tannins from the tart cherries.
