Steps:
- Heat the olive oil in a large (10-inch) saute pan until hot. Add the bread and cook over medium heat, tossing frequently, until the bread is evenly toasted and browned. Sprinkle with salt and pepper.
PANFRIED CROUTONS
Sprinkle these cubes into soups, or toss them into salads.

Steps:
- Cut bread into 1/2-inch cubes, yielding about 4 cups. Heat a large nonstick pan over medium heat. Melt 1 1/2 tablespoons butter until bubbling. Add half the bread cubes; cook, tossing occasionally, until crisp and golden, about 2 minutes. Add 1/2 tablespoon butter to pan, swirl to melt, and cook croutons 5 minutes longer. Set aside on a plate.
- Repeat process with remaining butter and bread cubes. Season croutons with salt and pepper, and serve.
GARLIC CROUTONS
A very simple recipe, these croutons are good for a Caesar's Salad or any tossed green salad.

Steps:
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
- In a large saute pan, melt butter over medium heat. Stir in garlic; cook and stir for 1 minute. Add bread cubes, and toss to coat. Spread on a baking sheet.
- Bake for 15 minutes, or until crisp and dry. Check frequently to prevent burning. Cool.

SKILLET-TOASTED MINI CROUTONS
Steps:
- Halve garlic cloves. In a 12-inch skillet heat oil with garlic over moderate heat until hot but not smoking and cook bread, stirring, until golden, about 5 minutes. With a slotted spoon transfer croutons to paper towels to drain and discard garlic. Season croutons with salt. Croutons keep in an airtight container at room temperature 1 week.

- Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Cut bread into 1/4-inch cubes. Toss with butter on a rimmed baking sheet. Toast in oven, tossing once, until pale golden, 9 to 10 minutes. Croutonscan be stored in an airtight container at room temperature up to 3 days.
PLAIN TOASTED CROUTONS
Steps:
- Preheat the oven to 350°F. Remove the crusts from the bread and slice into 1/2-inch strips and then the strips into 1/2-inch cubes, to make 4 cups. Spread the cubes in a single layer on a cookie sheet and set in the oven for about 10 minutes, turning once or twice, until lightly toasted on all sides. Spread the cubes on a tray to cool before using or freezing.
