Ginger-Turmeric Herbal Tea image

If you are having trouble including these anti-inflammatory spices in your diet, here is an alternative to supplements. Actually quite tasty! I believe this tea is popular in Okinawa, Japan. Just remember turmeric stains. I make mine in an old mason jar, wrapped in an old tea towel! Turmeric is used for medicinal purposes in India.

2 cups water
½ teaspoon ground turmeric
½ teaspoon chopped fresh ginger
½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 tablespoon honey
1 lemon wedge

Steps:

  • Bring water to a boil in a small saucepan; add turmeric, ginger, and cinnamon. Reduce heat to medium-low and simmer for 10 minutes. Strain tea into a large glass; add honey and lemon wedge.

2 inch ginger root washed (thinly sliced)
2 inch turmeric root washed (thinly sliced)
½ a lemon sliced (plus more for serving)
6 cups filtered water
Honey (optional)
⅛ teaspoon black pepper (optional)
½ tablespoon coconut oil (optional)

Steps:

  • Place the sliced ginger, turmeric and lemon in a small saucepan. Add the filtered water.
  • Bring the mixture to a boil, then simmer for 5-10 minutes to deepen the color. Strain and serve immediately with honey, if desired.

1 cup almond or coconut milk 1/2 tsp turmeric 1/2-inch slice fresh ginger root
peeled and grated or finely chopped dash of black pepper or cayenne pepper 1/2 to 1 tsp honey or other natural sweetener such as maple syrup
coconut sugar
stevia
or monk fruit

Steps:

  • Heat the milk in a saucepan or in the microwave.Place remaining ingredients in a mug and add a few teaspoons of the warm milk. Stir to combine.Add remaining milk. Strain to remove ginger pieces if desired.Notes:You can also add a small pat of butter, ½ to 1 teaspoon coconut oil, cinnamon, cardamom, nutmeg, allspice, star anise, pumpkin pie spice, and/or cloves. For a non-creamy tea use water, or make your favorite tea and remaining ingredients. You can start with ½ teaspoon turmeric and gradually increase from there if you want more of that flavor.

  • If using the paste: simply heat your milk on the stove. Remove from the heat and stir in the paste. The measurements don’t have to be exact, but generally, 1/4 teaspoon of golden milk turmeric paste to one cup of milk works perfectly. Add a few grates of fresh ginger root for extra healing properties.
  • If not using the paste, blend or whisk all ingredients together, then warm through on the stove over medium heat for 15 minutes. Let it very gently simmer for 15 minutes but not boil.
