BONNIE'S HOMEMADE DOG KIBBLE

This dog food recipe makes two large pizza pans full of kibble. Store in the refrigerator or freeze it in the freezer because it contains no preservatives, additives or dyes.

Categories     For Pets

Number Of Ingredients 12

2 - cups whole wheat flour
1 1/2 - cups all purpose unbleached flour
1/2 - cup soy flour
1 - cup cornmeal
1 - cup nonfat dry powdered milk
1 - cup rolled oats
1/2 - cup wheat germ
1/2 - cup brewers yeast
1 - tablespoon salt
1 - large egg
5 - tablespoons corn oil or other oil
3 to 4 - cups of water to make it like thin pancake batter

Steps:

  • Heat oven to 350 degrees. In large bowl, combine the egg and the oil. Stir water into the dry ingredients. Then stir the egg mixture and mix all of this well. This will be a thin batter. Divide the batter between lipped baking sheets. I use two large pizza pans. Spread the batter evenly, about 1/2 inch thick. Bake 45 minutes. It will shrink back from the edges and lightly brown. Cool, then slice into small pieces. Store covered in refrigerator. Place in freezer bags and freeze.
  • There ARE a lot of opinions about how to feed our dogs, and I am really concerned about the dog food that is available, even from the Vet. So my opinion is that I am going to go this route. I did my research, and everyone in the field has an opinion, and some of these people are very qualified to give opinions, some are not. So you do have to watch who you believe and who you don't believe--like with anything else in life. I am happy with what I have come up with to feed Chantilly and Phoebe, who happen to be be very dear to my heart. As for nutrition, there is more nutrition in this dog food I am feeding my girls than there is in a bag of any dog food out there. There are also multi-vitamins available from your Vet that you can purchase to boost your dog's diet if you are concerned about anything that is lacking. Now this paragraph is very important. It is the WAY that I feed my dogs. I make kibble, BUT I also make dog food. There is a difference. Kibble is dried and the dog food I make is not dried. I combine and feed BOTH to my animals. So I don't feel they are missing anything nutrition-wise. I feed them some Kibble and I add my recipe of dog food to it, and cover both with unseasoned homemade chicken broth. My dog food consists of chopped cooked chicken, fresh vegetables cooked in the broth (no garlic or onions, no salt). The recipe is posted. The girls love it AND it is healthy. No, I don't have a degree in dog nutrition (if there is such a thing) but I know I can do better than what I was feeding them.

  • Regulation of Pet Food Quality. Pet food recalls are quite prevalent these days, which makes dog owners worry about the quality and safety of dog foods they feed their canines.
  • No Filler Ingredients in Homemade Foods. Commercial pet foods bulk up their products with cheap filler ingredients that lack nutritional value. This allows for the creation of large amounts of food for a reduced cost.
  • Increased Variety in the Diet. Feeding a commercial dog food diet often result in feeding the same variety of kibble for at least a month at a time (think one 30 lb bag of kibble).
