These bars make an excellent fall dessert. We like to warm individual servings in the microwave and serve with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. It quickly became a family favorite; maybe it'll become one of your family's, too. -Carol Stuber, Osawatomie, Kansas

1/2 cup butter, softened
1/4 cup shortening
1 cup packed brown sugar
1-3/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup old-fashioned or quick-cooking oats
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 cup chopped pecans, optional
FILLING:
4-1/2 cups coarsely chopped peeled tart apples
3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 package (11 ounces) caramels
3 tablespoons butter

Steps:

  • In a large bowl, cream butter, shortening and brown sugar until light and fluffy, 5-7 minutes. Add flour, oats, salt and baking soda; mix well. If desired, stir in pecans. Set aside 2 cups. Press remaining oat mixture into an ungreased 13x9-in. baking pan. , For filling, toss apples with flour; spoon over the crust. In a saucepan, melt the caramels and butter over low heat; drizzle over apples. Top with the reserved oat mixture. , Bake at 400° until lightly browned, 25-30 minutes. Cool before cutting into bars.

1 pouch (1 lb 1.5 oz) Betty Crocker™ oatmeal cookie mix
1 egg
1 cup finely chopped peeled apple
3/4 cup caramel topping
1/4 cup Gold Medal™ all-purpose flour

Steps:

  • Heat oven to 350°F. Spray bottom of 13x9-inch pan with cooking spray.
  • In large bowl, cut butter into cookie mix using fork or pastry blender. Stir in egg until mixture is crumbly.
  • Reserve 1 1/2 cups cookie mixture. Press remaining cookie mixture into bottom of pan. Bake 15 minutes. Sprinkle apple evenly over crust. In small bowl, mix caramel topping and flour; drizzle over apples. Sprinkle reserved cookie mixture over apples.
  • Bake 20 to 25 minutes or until golden brown. Cool completely, about 2 hours. For bars, cut into 9 rows by 4 rows.

I made these one night out of a need for apples, caramel, and cake!

Number Of Ingredients 6

1 (15.25 ounce) package yellow cake mix
½ cup unsalted butter, cut into cubes
1 cup evaporated milk, divided
3 medium apples - peeled, cored and chopped
1 (11 ounce) package individually wrapped caramels, unwrapped
¼ cup cinnamon chips, or more to taste

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease a 9x13-inch baking pan.
  • Place cake mix in a bowl and cut in butter with 2 knives or a pastry blender. Stir in 1/2 cup evaporated milk, then apples. Pour 1/2 of the batter into the prepared pan and set remaining batter aside.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 20 minutes.
  • While bottom bar layer is baking, combine caramel candies and 1/2 cup evaporated milk in a saucepan over low heat; cook and stir until melted. Remove from the heat.
  • Remove the baking pan from the oven and drizzle caramel mixture over top. Sprinkle with cinnamon chips and pour reserved batter over top. Return to the oven and bake until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean, 20 to 30 more minutes.

1 package spice cake mix (regular size)
3/4 cup butter, melted
1/3 cup evaporated milk
1 large egg
FROSTING:
1/3 cup packed brown sugar
1/3 cup evaporated milk
1/4 cup butter, cubed
2 cups confectioners' sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon sea salt

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350°. Grease a 13x9-in. baking pan. In a large bowl, combine cake mix, butter, milk and egg; beat on low speed 30 seconds. Beat on medium 2 minutes (batter will be thick)., Transfer to prepared pan. Bake 15-20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool in pan on a wire rack., For frosting, in a large saucepan, combine brown sugar, milk and butter over medium heat; bring to a boil, stirring occasionally. Reduce heat; simmer, uncovered, 3 minutes., Remove from heat. Stir in confectioners' sugar and vanilla. Immediately spread icing over cake; sprinkle with salt. Cool completely. Cut into bars. 1/2 cup butter or margarine, softened
1/4 cup shortening
1 3/4 cups Gold Medal™ all-purpose flour
1 1/2 cups quick-cooking oats
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
4 1/2 cups coarsely chopped peeled tart apples (3 medium)
3 tablespoons Gold Medal™ all-purpose flour
1 bag (14 ounces) caramels

Steps:

  • Heat oven to 400°F. Mix brown sugar, butter and shortening in large bowl. Stir in 1 3/4 cups flour, the oats, salt and baking soda. Reserve 2 cups oat mixture; press remaining oat mixture in ungreased rectangular pan, 13x9x2 inches.
  • Toss apples and 3 tablespoons flour; spread over mixture in pan. Heat caramels over low heat, stirring occasionally, until melted; pour evenly over apples. Sprinkle with reserved oat mixture; press lightly.
  • Bake 25 to 30 minutes or until topping is golden brown and apples are tender. For 36 bars, cut into 6 rows by 6 rows while warm. Store covered in refrigerator.

2 cups all-purpose flour
2 cups quick cooking oats
1 ½ cups packed brown sugar
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 ¼ cups butter, melted
2 cups apples - peeled, cored and sliced
½ cup chopped walnuts
1 ½ cups caramel ice cream topping
½ cup all-purpose flour

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease a 15x10 inch jellyroll pan.
  • In a large bowl, combine the flour, quick cooking oats, brown sugar, and baking soda. Stir in the melted butter. Mix until crumbly. This is the crust. Press 1/2 of this mixture into the prepared baking pan. Bake for 8 minutes in preheated oven.
  • In a small pan, over medium heat combine the caramel topping and the remaining 1/2 cup of flour. Stirring constantly, bring to a boil and cook for 3 to 5 minutes. This is the caramel filling.
  • Spread apple slices evenly over the baked crust. Sprinkle on the nuts. Then Pour the caramel filling over the apple layer. Crumble the remaining crust mixture over the top of everything. Bake again for 20 to 25 minutes or until golden brown. Cool before cutting into bars.
