Steps:
- In a small pan over medium-high heat, bring cider, orange juice, vanilla bean, cinnamon stick, and star anise to a boil. Place pears face down in the pan. Lower heat and simmer gently until a knife inserted into the pears meets no resistance, about 10-20 minutes. Once pears are tender, kill heat and let cool in pan. Remove to serving plates and set aside. Slice each pear from narrow to wide end in 5 or 6 slices; keep the slices attached at the narrow end. Press gently at one side to fan the pear slices.
- Over medium heat, return remaining poaching liquid to a boil and reduce to a glaze. Pour over pears.
- Mix orange zest with yogurt. Dollop equally on pears. Sprinkle almonds over yogurt. Serve.

CIDER POACHED PEARS
This is an excellent dessert that is sure to impress your friends or family. The pears hold up really well in the slow cooker, and by poaching them with cider, the complementary spices, like cinnamon and nutmeg, are infused into each pear. Not only do the pears taste amazing, but they look as good as they taste.

Steps:
- Combine the cider, sugar, orange juice, orange zest, cloves, cinnamon stick and vanilla bean in a saucepan over medium-high heat. Bring to a simmer and cook just until the sugar dissolves, 2 minutes. Transfer the mixture to the slow cooker. Add the pears, and then cover with a lid and cook on low2 hours, turning the pears halfway through.
- Remove the pears using a slotted spoon and transfer to serving plates or a shallow dish. Carefully strain the poaching liquid back into the saucepan and reduce the liquid by half until thickened and syrupy. Pour the reduced sauce over the pears and chill in the refrigerator an additional 2 hours or up to 2 days.

Steps:
- Peel, halve and core the pears. Mix the sugar and lemon juice with 200ml water in a small saucepan. Halve the vanilla pod and scrape the seeds into the pan, then add the pod (or add the vanilla bean paste). Heat until the sugar has dissolved.
- Add the pears and cover the surface with a circle of baking parchment (this will ensure the pears cook through evenly). Cook for 15-20 mins until the pears feel soft when poked with a knife, then leave to cool. Can be kept chilled in the liquid for up to one week.
- Meanwhile, make your porridge. Mix the almond butter with enough poached pear liquid to form a drizzling consistency, then spoon over the porridge and top the bowls with the pears. Scatter with the toasted flaked almonds.
