VEGAN SWEET AND SPICY BBQ TOFU
Dry rubbed and baked, then finished with the best BBQ sauce ever. This tofu is perfect!

- You want to press the block of tofu first, if you need instructions on how to press tofu, check out my TOFU COOKING GUIDE.
- When you are ready to make the tofu, preheat the oven to 375 degrees.
- Now, cut the tofu into cubes or rectangles, however large you want them to be. Then put the tofu into a large mixing bowl.
- Drizzle the tofu with the liquid aminos or soy sauce, the maple syrup and the water. Toss to coat all of the tofu and let it sit for about 5 minutes.
- Drain any excess liquid there is out of the bowl of tofu. Then sprinkle with the smoked paprika and the chili powder. Toss to coat all of the tofu in the spices.
- Then put the tofu on a baking sheet sprayed with non-stick spray or brushed with oil.
- Bake the tofu for 15 minutes, flip each piece and bake another 10-15 minutes or until brown and firm.
- While the tofu is baking, make the BBQ sauce. Add all the BBQ sauce ingredients as well as a pinch of salt and pepper to a small sauce pan. Whisk to combine.
- Heat the sauce pan on medium high. Bring to a bubble, reduce heat to low and simmer for 10-15 minutes or until the sauce has thickened slightly. Taste and adjust seasoning.
- Once the tofu is out of the oven, brush each side with the BBQ sauce, then either return to the oven for 5-7 minutes to finish it with the BBQ sauce.
- Or put the tofu on skewers, a few pieces on each skewer, then grill on a grill or grill pan brushed with olive oil for 2-3 minutes on each side, brushing with more BBQ sauce if needed.
- Serve with extra BBQ sauce!

- Start by pressing your tofu. I will link to my tofu guide below if you would like a step by step of that process. Press the block of tofu for at least 30 minutes, the longer the better. You can even do it in the morning before you plan to make it.
- When you are ready to eat, make the Korean BBQ sauce first. In a medium sized mixing bowl, whisk together the tomato sauce, rice wine vinegar, soy sauce, agave, Gochujang, the finely grated apple, garlic and ginger, and the sesame seeds. Whisk until combined. Set aside.
- Then, take your pressed block of tofu, cut into cubes, or thinner rectangular slices like I did. Whatever you prefer. Add the tofu to a large mixing bowl, then sprinkle with the corn starch and salt. Toss to coat all of the tofu.
- Now, heat a little bit of oil at the bottom of a non stick pan on medium high. Add the tofu to the pan, don't over crowd it, if the pan is too small to fit all of it, do it in two batches.

- Press the liquid out of the tofu – you can use a tofu press, or wrap it with a towel and place a heavy pan on top of it for 10-15 minutes. Cut into cubes.
- Mix the cornstarch, brown sugar, spices, and salt together. Toss cubed tofu *gently* with the spices to coat, being careful not to break the tofu. Transfer to a baking sheet and drizzle with just a tiny bit of olive oil so it doesn’t stick. Bake for 30-45 minutes, until the exterior is lightly golden and dry-ish to the touch.
- While the tofu is baking, prep your extras for the bowls (see notes for ideas). Arrange beautifully in a bowl, snap a pic for the ‘gram, and devour!

- Add everything except the tofu to a small saucepan, whisk together then set over medium heat. Allow to come gently to a boil and cook for 5 minutes, stirring frequently. Turn off the heat, taste (carefully as it will be very hot) and adjust seasonings to taste then set aside.
- Open the tofu, drain any excess water then lay it on its side and cut carefully lengthways into ½ inch thick large slices. Different blocks of tofu are different thicknesses but most you will get 2 or 3 slices. Take each of those slices and cut it into triangles. There are pictures in the post above showing how to cut it if you need a visual representation.
- Lay the tofu triangles out in a large dish and pour over just enough of the sauce to coat the tofu. Use a clean hand to make sure all sides of the tofu are covered. At this stage you can cover the dish tightly and refrigerate for up to 3 days before proceeding with baking it.
- Lay the tofu triangles out on a lined metal baking tray (it must be metal and not glass or ceramic cookware) and bake at 400° F (200 °C) for 25 minutes. Keep the dish with the remaining glaze in it as you will need it later.
