EASY REFRIED BEANS

Easy Refried Beans image

These refried beans are delicious and so easy to make. This refried bean recipe is quick, too-use canned beans and they're ready in 25 minutes! Plus, these beans are healthy, vegan and gluten free. Recipe yields 2 1/2 cups refried beans (21 ounces), enough for 5 servings.

Provided by Cookie and Kate

Categories     Side Dish

Time 25m

Number Of Ingredients 10

1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil
1/2 cup finely chopped yellow or white onion (about 1/2 small onion)
1/4 teaspoon fine sea salt
2 cloves garlic, pressed or minced
1/2 teaspoon chili powder
1/4 teaspoon ground cumin
2 cans (15 ounces each) pinto beans, rinsed and drained, or 3 cups cooked pinto beans
1/2 cup water
2 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro
1 tablespoon lime juice (about 1/2 medium lime), to taste

Steps:

  • In a medium saucepan over medium heat, warm the olive oil until shimmering. Add the onions and salt. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the onions have softened and are turning translucent, about 5 to 8 minutes.
  • Add the garlic, chili powder and cumin. Cook, stirring constantly, until fragrant, about 30 seconds. Pour in the drained beans and water. Stir, cover and cook for 5 minutes.
  • Reduce the heat to low and remove the lid. Use a potato masher or the back of a fork to mash up about at least half of the beans, until you reach your desired consistency. Continue to cook the beans, uncovered, stirring often, for 3 more minutes.
  • Remove the saucepan from the heat and stir in the cilantro and lime juice. Taste, and add more salt and lime juice if necessary. If the beans seem dry, add a very small splash of water and stir to combine. Cover until you're ready to serve.

REFRIED BLACK BEANS

Refried Black Beans image

Made with cooked black beans in about 15 minutes, this is the perfect side dish for any Mexican or TexMex recipe!

Provided by Cheryl Malik

Categories     Side Dish

Time 30m

Number Of Ingredients 6

3 tablespoons neutral oil (avocado, refined coconut, or other neutral oil)
½ cup finely chopped white onion
2-3 cloves garlic (minced)
1 ½ - 2 teaspoons kosher salt (see Notes)
3 cups cooked black beans (canned or homemade, drained, divided)
¾ cup liquid from can of black beans (or ¾ cup water)

Steps:

  • Heat medium skillet over medium heat. When hot, add neutral oil and swirl to coat bottom of skillet entirely.
  • When oil is hot and shimmering, add chopped onion, minced garlic, and kosher salt. Stir well and cook, stirring constantly, until vegetables are soft and begin to brown, approximately 3 to 4 minutes.
  • Add 1 ½ cups black beans to skillet. Use back of wooden spoon or potato masher to mash beans completely, until no whole or partial beans remain. Add remaining 1 ½ cups black beans and mash to preferred consistency.
  • Cook mashed beans, stirring constantly, until starches begin to coat bottom of skillet and turn golden brown, approximately 3 minutes.
  • Slowly pour in bean liquid or water and stir to incorporate. Bring mixture to simmer over medium heat and cook, stirring and scraping bottom of skillet, until liquid is fully incorporated and beans are heated-through, approximately 2 minutes. Note: beans may look soupy but will thicken as they cool. Be sure to use the entire ¾ cup of liquid to prevent beans from drying out.
  • Serve as desired with chips, tacos, or other entrée.

THE BEST HOMEMADE REFRIED BEANS

The Best Homemade Refried Beans image

These are the Best Refried Beans Ever, and they only take about 15 minutes to make! You'll never go back to canned again. To make homemade refried beans, you'll need bacon (and the grease), onion, some canned (or cooked) pinto beans, spices, chicken broth, and I love adding fresh cilantro for a boost of fresh flavor.

Provided by Elizabeth Lindemann

Categories     Side

Time 15m

Number Of Ingredients 8

2 slices bacon
1/2 onion ((diced))
1 teaspoon chili powder
1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper ((or less, if you prefer mild spice))
15 oz. canned pinto beans ((drained and rinsed, about 1.5 cups cooked beans))
1/2 cup chicken stock/broth ((or veggie stock, or water))
1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro ((optional))
salt and pepper (to taste)

Steps:

  • In a heavy skillet (I used a cast iron one), fry the 2 slices bacon until crispy on medium high heat. Remove the bacon and set aside. Chop into small pieces when cooled.
  • Meanwhile, the diced onion to the bacon grease in the skillet; sauté until soft and slightly browned (about 2 minutes).
  • Add the chili powder (1 teaspoon) and cayenne pepper (1/4 teaspoon); stir to coat the onions.
  • Add the drained and rinsed pinto beans and chicken stock (1/2 cup). Use a potato masher (or a fork) to mash the beans to desired texture, then stir to incorporate with the liquid.
  • Continue heating until heated through. It may seem pretty watery at this point. If there is too much liquid, continue heating until some of the liquid has evaporated, until you reach the desired consistency, stirring frequently, keeping in mind the beans will thicken additionally as they cool.
  • Stir in cilantro (1/4 cup) if using, the chopped bacon, and season with salt and pepper to taste. Serve hot.

REFRIED BLACK BEANS (FRIJOLES REFRITOS) RECIPE

Refried Black Beans (Frijoles Refritos) Recipe image

Making a batch of Refried Black Beans at home is super simple. With just a few ingredients and spices, this refried black beans recipe can be shared as a side or used as a component in your favorite Mexican food recipes. This recipe is vegetarian and vegan friendly. __________________________For best refried black bean flavor use my Homemade Black Beans recipe. You'll need to double the recipe for enough beans to make this refried beans recipe (with some black beans leftover). This recipe yields about 3 1/4 C (580g) of refried beans.

Provided by Traci York | Vanilla And Bean

Categories     Component     Side Dish

Time 28m

Number Of Ingredients 8

2 Tbs Olive Oil
1/4 C (35g) Purple or White Onion (diced fine)
1 tsp Ground Cumin
1/2 tsp Chili Powder
1/4 tsp Garlic Granules
1/4 tsp Fine Sea Salt (adjust to taste)
3 1/4 C (825g) Cooked Black Beans (and their juice, either homemade or about 2 cans (15 1/2oz ea), do not drain)
1/2 Lime

Steps:

  • In a large skillet or cast iron skillet, add the oil and heat until it shimmers. Turn the heat to medium low and add the onions. Saute the onions for about 5-8 minutes or until they're softened.
  • Sprinkle in the cumin, chili powder, garlic and salt. Stir for about 30 seconds to incorporate into the onions.
  • To the pan, pour in the beans and all their juices. Stir and bring to a simmer. Once simmering reduce heat to medium low and begin mashing. Cook, while mashing and stirring for about 10 - 15 minutes or until most of the beans are broken up, some chunks are okay and they're shiny. Adjust the heat down as needed. They will thicken as you mash and cook them. Overcooking causes dryness.
  • When to the desired consistency remove from heat and squeeze in the juice from half a lime. Stir, taste for salt. Rest for about 5 minutes, if needed. They'll thicken further as they cool. Lid until ready to use. Share warm as a side or use as a component in another recipe. Feel free to add a splash of water or veggie broth if they become too thick.
  • Store in a lidded container in the fridge for up to three days, or the freezer for up to two weeks. Rewarm stovetop on low heat with a splash of water to thin as needed.

INSTANT POT REFRIED BEANS

Instant Pot Refried Beans image

The BEST Instant Pot Refried Beans! Easy and absolutely delicious, this recipe tastes better than a restaurant. Use for any of your favorite Mexican dishes!

Provided by Erin Clarke / Well Plated

Categories     Side Dish

Time 1h45m

Number Of Ingredients 13

1 pound dry pinto beans (2 cups)
2 teaspoons extra-virgin olive oil
1 small yellow onion (chopped into 1/4-inch dice)
1 jalapeno (cored, seeded, and finely chopped)
3 cloves garlic (minced (about 1 tablespoon))
4 cups low-sodium chicken stock or vegetable stock (divided)
3 cups water
2 bay leaves
1 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt
1 teaspoon ground cumin
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1/8 to 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
For serving: queso fresco or shredded Monterey jack cheese

Steps:

  • Place the pinto beans in a large colander. Thoroughly rinse them. Pick the beans over, removing any damaged or clearly misshapen beans and discarding them. Set the rinsed beans aside.
  • Turn a 6-quart (or larger) Instant Pot to SAUTE. Add the oil. Once the oil is hot, add the onion and jalapeno. Sauté for 2 minutes, then add the garlic and let cook just until fragrant, about 30 seconds. Add a few splashes of chicken stock and scrape along the bottom of the pot to remove any stuck-on bits of food (this will prevent a BURN warning). Add the remaining stock, water, bay leaves, salt, cumin, oregano, cayenne, and the rinsed and drained beans. Lightly stir to combine.
  • Seal the Instant Pot. Cook on HIGH (manual) for 45 minutes. When the 45 minutes of pressure cooking has finished, let the pressure release naturally for 25 minutes. Vent to release any remaining pressure. Carefully open the lid. The beans will be very liquidy.
  • Discard the bay leaves. Reserve 2 cups of the bean cooking liquid in a bowl or measuring cup, then drain the remainder. Return to the beans to the pot. With an immersion blender (or by hand with a potato masher), puree the beans until they reach your desired consistency, adding some of the reserved liquid as needed. (You can also scoop the beans into a blender in batches and puree them that way-be sure to let the beans cool somewhat first so that they do not splatter). Taste and adjust seasoning as desired. Sprinkle with any desired toppings, serve, and enjoy!

A healthier, low fat refried black beans recipe made with canned black beans, onion, garlic, and diced green chiles.

Provided by Mason Woodruff

Categories     Side Dishes

Time 20m

Number Of Ingredients 7

2 cans Black Beans
4 oz can Diced Green Chiles
1 medium (250g) White Onion, finely diced
5 cloves (25g) Garlic, minced
1 tablespoon (16g) Olive Oil
1-2 tablespoons (15-30g) Hot Sauce
1/2-1 cup (120-240mL) Vegetable, Chicken, or Beef Broth

Steps:

  • Add the olive oil to a large skillet over medium-high heat before adding the onion. Cook for 4-5 minutes until the onion softens and begins to slightly brown.
  • Add the garlic and cook until fragrant, about 30 seconds, before adding the diced green chiles and hot sauce. Stir until combined.
  • Add the black beans and 1/2 cup of broth. (If your black beans have lots of liquid in the can, you may not need the rest of the broth.) Cook until very little liquid remains, about 5 minutes.
  • Reduce to a low heat and use a potato masher or the backside of a spatula to mash the black beans. If your refried beans are thicker than you'd like, add more broth and cook a bit further.

Super Easy Refried Beans. Homemade refried beans are a lot easier to make than you think. All you need is 4 ingredients. Ready in under 15 minutes!

Provided by Kelley Simmons

Categories     Side Dish

15.5 ounce can black beans, drained and rinsed
2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
1/2 cup onions, diced
2 cloves garlic, minced
1/4 tsp cumin
1/4 tsp dried oregano
1/4 tsp salt
1/4 tsp pepper
1/2 tsp chili powder
3/4 cup chicken broth

Steps:

  • Add olive oil to a medium saucepan and heat over medium-high heat. Add in onions and saute until tender and golden brown 3-4 minutes. Add in garlic and saute for an additional minute.
  • Stir in the spices: cumin, oregano, salt, pepper and chili powder. Allow them to cook for one minute. Keep an eye on them and continuously stir so they do not burn.
  • Add in beans and chicken broth and turn the heat down to low. Simmer until the mixture has thickened a bit, 5-10 minutes. (The mixture will still look a bit watery but will thicken when we mash the beans)
  • Mash the beans with the back of your spatula or with a potato masher. Make sure to leave some of the beans whole to keep a chunky texture. Serve the beans as is or top with cilantro, raw onions, sour cream, or queso fresco.

REFRIED BLACK BEANS

Refried Black Beans image

Love refried beans? Give refried black beans a try! Start with canned or dried black beans, then fry and mash them with savory seasonings. This'll be your new go-to recipe for refried beans.

Provided by Elise Bauer

Categories     Side Dish     Budget     Comfort Food     Pantry Meal

Time 4h10m

Yield 6

Number Of Ingredients 18

Ingredients for cooking the dry beans:
1 pound dry black beans
1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
1/2 large white onion, chopped (about 1 1/2 cups)
1 garlic clove, minced
2 teaspoons salt
1/2 cup chopped fresh cilantro (leaves and tender stems)
Additional ingredients for frying the beans after they've been cooked:
1 teaspoon chipotle chili powder
1 teaspoon chili powder
1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
1/2 large white onion, chopped (about 1 1/2 cups)
1 garlic clove, minced
Green onion
Cilantro
Crumbled cotija or queso fresco cheese (omit for vegan version)
Tortilla chips or corn tortillas

Steps:

  • Soak dry beans: Place dry black beans in a bowl and add enough water to cover the beans by two inches. Let sit overnight. Alternatively, if you don't have time to soak the beans overnight, place the dry beans in a large bowl and pour boiling water over the beans, covering the beans with at least an inch of water, and let sit for one hour. Note, if your dry beans are a little old, or if you have reason to believe that they will be tough to cook (beans stored in hot or humid climates can get tough), you can add some salt to the water (1 1/2 teaspoons of salt 2 quarts of water) which at this stage will help the beans soften when they cook later.
  • Serve: Garnish with chopped green onions, fresh cilantro, and crumbled cotija or queso fresco cheese. Serve with tortilla chips or corn or flour tortillas (corn if you are gluten-free). Great in tacos or burritos, or for a dip, or a side with steak.
