CABBAGE GOULASH



Cabbage Goulash image

Cabbage is a very Southern dish. People who don't even like cabbage love this recipe. This goulash is good served with French bread or hard rolls, and I usually make a pot of pinto beans to go along with it.

Provided by Taste of Home

Yield 10-12 servings.

Number Of Ingredients 10

1 pound bulk pork sausage
1 pound ground beef
1 large onion, chopped
1 can (28 ounces) diced tomatoes
1 can (6 ounces) tomato paste
2 tablespoons cider vinegar
1 tablespoon chili powder
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes, optional
10 cups shredded cabbage

Steps:

  • In a large kettle, cook the sausage, beef and onion over medium heat until meat is no longer pink; drain. Stir in the remaining ingredients. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat; simmer, uncovered, for 15-20 minutes or until cabbage is tender.

1 medium-size onion
1 medium-size head of cabbage
3 tablespoons corn oil
1 cup grated fresh coconut
1 cup water
4 tablespoons cider vinegar
2 teaspoons whole cumin seeds
3/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
  • Thinly slice the onion and finely shred the cabbaage. In a heavy pan over a medium flame, cook the onion and the coconut in the oil until light brown. Add cabbage and water. Stir 5 minutes and then add the vinegar, cumin, salt and pepper. Cover pan and cook 10 minutes or until all the liquid has been absorbed. Or transfer to a baking dish and bake in oven 10 to 20 minutes or until all the liquid has been absorbed.
