Bon Bon Christmas Cookies image

Cute 'Cherries in a Blanket' cookies. This recipe goes back at least three generations. My grandma made them, my mom made them, now I make them!

Provided by Chan

Categories     Desserts     Fruit Dessert Recipes     Cherry Dessert Recipes

Yield 24

Number Of Ingredients 5

½ (8 ounce) package cream cheese
½ cup butter flavored shortening
2 cups sifted all-purpose flour
1 ½ cups sifted confectioners' sugar
2 (10 ounce) jars maraschino cherries, drained

Steps:

  • In a medium bowl, stir together the shortening and cream cheese until well blended. Stir in the flour, you may need to use your hands to help it form a dough. If the mixture seems too dry, add a couple of teaspoons of water. Cover and chill several hours or overnight.
  • Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Lightly grease cookie sheets.
  • Before rolling out the dough, dust the rolling surface heavily with confectioners' sugar. Roll the dough out to 1/8 inch thickness. Cut into 1x4 inch strips. Place a cherry on the end of each strip. Roll up each strip starting with the cherry. Place on prepared cookie sheets and dust with a little of the confectioners' sugar.
  • Bake for 7 to 10 minutes in the preheated oven. Cookies should brown slightly. Dust again with the confectioners' sugar. Allow cookies to cool before serving, the cherries are very hot!

Categories     Desserts     Chocolate Dessert Recipes

Time 2h20m

Yield 75

Number Of Ingredients 8

1 cup margarine, softened
2 pounds confectioners' sugar, sifted
1 (14 ounce) can sweetened condensed milk
3 cups coconut
1 cup finely chopped walnuts
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

2 tablespoons shortening

Steps:

  • In large bowl, combine margarine, confectioners' sugar, condensed milk, coconut, chopped walnuts and vanilla. Stir well. Cover and chill in the refrigerator for 2 hours, or until mixture has thickened enough to roll into balls. Roll the mixture into 1-inch balls and place close together, but not touching, on cookie sheets. Freeze until hard.
  • While bonbons are freezing, line a cookie sheet or flat surface with waxed paper. Combine chocolate chips and shortening in the top of a double boiler, over, not in, simmering water. Stir until melted. Using a toothpick or a fork, dip each bonbon in the melted chocolate. Place on waxed paper to dry. When chocolate has hardened, store bonbons in plastic bag in the freezer.

BOOZY BON BONS

Boozy Bon Bons image

I've had this recipe for years and don't really know where I got it. I've only ever made these during the Christmas season. I store them in an old clear glass, clasp-lid mason jar with gold glittered decorations and a pretty ribbon. Cooking time is standing time. Rum or Brandy can be substituted for the whiskey. For those of you in the UK, you can substitute digestive bisquits for the wafers and also sub golden syrup for the corn syrup.

Provided by CulinaryQueen

Categories     Candy

Time 1h10m

Yield 60 bon bons

Number Of Ingredients 7

1 (12 ounce) box vanilla wafer cookies
1 cup powdered sugar
3 tablespoons cocoa powder
1 cup walnuts, finely chopped
3 tablespoons light corn syrup
1/2 cup whiskey
1/2 cup powdered sugar (for rolling)

Steps:

  • Put cookies into a large ziplock bag and crush with a rolling pin or put into a food processor until you have very fine crumbs.
  • Mix the 1 cup powdered sugar, cocoa powder and walnuts thoroughly. Add to the cookie crumbs in a large bowl and mix together.
  • Add the corn syrup and whiskey and stir to combine. If mixture seems dry, add more whiskey, about a tablespoon at a time, up to 1/4 cup more. Do not add any more than this or the mixture will be too wet.
  • Let mixture stand for 20 minutes.
  • Roll into 1" balls, then roll in powdered sugar and place on waxed paper. Let dry 30 minutes.
  • Store in airtight container 2-3 weeks to ripen before eating.

OREO BONBONS

Oreo Bonbons image

I often make these treats for holiday parties and there are never enough. My family is always sorely disappointed if I don't bring these treats for Christmas.

Provided by Audmkamp

Categories     Candy

Time 2h

Yield 24-36 bonbons

Number Of Ingredients 5

1 (20 ounce) package Oreo cookies
1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese or 1 (8 ounce) package reduced-fat cream cheese, softened
12 -24 ounces white chocolate chips
shortening (optional) or Crisco (optional)
candy sprinkles

Steps:

  • Crush whole oreos into a fine, crumbly powder. A food processor works best, but can also be done in a zip bag with a rolling pin.
  • Throughly mix cream cheese into oreo crumbs. Mixture will be very thick and sticky.
  • Chill until cold in refrigerator.
  • Roll dough into balls about the diameter of a quarter.
  • Chill again in freezer.
  • Melt white chocolate in a double boiler or small crock pot for dipping.
  • Remove a few balls at a time from the freezer and dip one at a time into the melted chocolate. This can be done using a toothpick inserted in the center, or I like to use two kabob skewers and use them to lift the balls out of the chocolate. Place on a wax paper covered baking sheet. Dipping is easiest if balls are cold.
  • Top with sprinkles appropriate for the holiday or occasion soon after dipping, and before chocolate hardens.
  • These are best eaten cold or frozen, so store in refrigerator or freezer.
  • Note: My experience has been that some brands of chocolate tend to get too stiff for dipping after awhile. To remedy this add a small amount (approx 1/2 tsp at a time) of shortening to the melted chocolate. Repeat as needed to keep chocolate smooth. Do not use margarine, butter, milk, or water as they could ruin the chocolate and make it curdle.
