You'll love this quick, easy and economical homemade sloppy joe recipe. Brown sugar adds a touch of sweetness, both for traditional sandwiches on buns or as a down-home topping for rice, biscuits or baked potatoes. -Laurie Hauser, Rochester, New York

1 pound ground beef
1 cup ketchup
1/4 cup water
2 tablespoons brown sugar
2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
2 teaspoons prepared mustard
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon onion powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
4 hamburger buns, split

Steps:

  • In a large skillet, cook beef over medium heat until no longer pink; drain. Stir in the ketchup, water, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, garlic powder, onion powder and salt. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat; cover and simmer for 15-20 minutes. Serve on buns.

Adapted from a Mr. Food recipe. I usually use my homemade spaghetti sauce but the store bought will do in a pinch. Simple seasonings--not flashy.

1 1/2 lbs ground beef
1 large zucchini, chopped
1 medium onion, chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 large tomatoes, chopped
1 (26 ounce) jar spaghetti sauce
salt and pepper
6 hamburger buns

Steps:

  • In a big non-stick skillet, add the ground beef, zucchini, and onion.
  • Cook over medium-high heat for 10-12 minutes or until the beef is browned and the zucchini is tender.
  • Change heat to medium-low; add in the tomato and spaghetti sauce; stir and cook 4-5 minutes or until heated.
  • Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  • Spoon mixture over buns and serve immediately.
