Grandma's Homemade Icing image

This is a recipe handed down through my Mom's family for our homemade icing. The taste of it brings back many memories to me! One important tip is to make sure you beat the icing enough. Enjoy! :)

3/4 cup shortening
2 tablespoons white syrup
1 dash salt
1 teaspoon vanilla
4 cups powdered sugar
1/2 cup milk

Steps:

  • Beat the shortening and white syrup together.
  • Add salt and vanilla.
  • Continue beating while adding the powdered sugar and milk alternatively.

4 cups sifted confectioners' sugar

Steps:

  • Beat all ingredients at low speed for 7 to 10 minutes, or until icing forms peaks. Tip: Keep icing covered with a wet kitchen towel at all times. Icing can dry out quickly.
