Nonalcoholic French 75 image

Pull out your finest coupe or Nick and Nora glass for this tart, nonalcoholic take on the French 75, ideal for nondrinkers and those taking a night (or week, or month, or year) off drinking. The key to the drink's complexity is in the sweet bay-peppercorn shrub, a rich-in-flavor, make-ahead base that lasts, stored in the refrigerator, up to one month.

Provided by Rebekah Peppler

Number Of Ingredients 7

3 dashes orange bitters (optional; see Tip)

Lemon twist

FRENCH 75

French 75 image

The French 75 cocktail dates back to 1915 and was an invention born from necessity. The usual mixer, soda water, was in short supply due to the war, so the French started topping their gin with readily available Champagne instead and voila! It was an instant classic. Nowadays, we can raise our glasses to this light and easy spritz on both special and everyday occasions alike.

French 75 Cocktail Recipe Named for a famously smooth French gun (the Canon de 75 modèle 1897), the FRENCH 75 is considerably more fun than its artillery namesake. Some say it was created by British soldiers in France in World War I and mixed in spent shell casings, but it was enjoyed (with a different name) by the Prince of Wales as far back as the 18th Century.
