Steps:
- Make sure your basil is washed and completely dry. I wash the entire plant and dry mine overnight on a towel.
- Preheat oven to 170 degrees. If your oven's lowest temperature is 175 or 180, that's fine.
- Place basil leaves on a baking sheet, making sure the leaves don't overlap. Depending on the amount of basil you have, you might need a few baking sheets.
- Bake for 45 minutes to 1 hour, or until basil leaves are dried and can easily crumble. Mine took 50 minutes.
- Remove basil from oven and crumble in bowl. The basil should easily crumble upon touching. I like to fill the bowl up with as many basil leaves I can fit in and then crumble with my fingers. You could also use a mortar and pestle.
- Store dried basil in jar for storage. I like to reuse spice jars I get from the store. If properly stored dried basil will last 1-2 years.

- Start by cutting fresh basil from your garden or grab that extra from the fridge. Wash the basil gently in cool water and spread on a kitchen towel to dry. (Or use a salad spinner if you’re in a hurry.)
- Preheat oven to its lowest setting. Our is 150 degrees. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Begin placing leaves one at a time on parchment lined baking sheet, tossing aside any leaves with brown spots. Also try to remove as much of the little stems at the bottom of the leaves as possible. These can get tough when drying out. Be sure to spread leaves out, not allowing them to pile on top of each other. If basil is overlapping, it may steam instead of dry out.
- Place basil in the oven for 1 to 1 1/2 hours. (Set a timer so you don’t forget about it!) Basil will be ready when it is dry to the touch. Remove basil from oven and let cool on the sheet.
- Using your fingers, crumble the dried basil up into tiny pieces. If there are some tougher stem pieces, you should be able to easily pick them out in this step.

Harvested leaves may be placed and spread out on some a wire-mesh screen, a clean bed sheet or a drying mat, and then placed under the sun for several days depending on weather conditions.
- Using an oven. Drying basil using an oven is a fairly simple method and usually takes only several hours up to one day to get the desired results. In this procedure…
- Using food dehydrator. Food dehydrators work by circulating heated air around the food to be dried to make sure that it is evenly dried. This method is not just great for drying herbs like basil, but also for drying and preserving fruits, and vegetables as well.

- Remove excess moisture. Either shake the leaves around in a strainer, lightly pat them dry with a clean lint-free towel, or toss them in a salad spinner.

- Air Drying or Sun Drying Your Basil. Air drying your herbs is a time-tested method that works well, but it does take quite a bit of time. Herbs generally need to hang for about 2 weeks before it’s fully dry and ready to be stored.
- Drying Basil in the Oven. Drying basil in the oven is my second favorite method for preserving your herbs. It takes a heck of a lot less time than it would to dry outside, and still retains much of the flavor.
- Drying Basil in the Microwave. If you’re in a time crunch, you can definitely use the microwave to accomplish the process of drying your basil. While it seems to remove the most flavor, it is by far the fastest method.
- Drying Basil with a Dehydrator. A dehydrator is a great tool to have in your home, especially as you start growing more and more herbs, vegetables, and fruits and want to preserve them through the winter.
