After sampling peppermint bark from an upscale store, I thought, "I can make that!" Using four ingredients, I came up with a simple version that won over my friends and family. -Patti Maurer, Wise, Virginia

Number Of Ingredients 4

1 teaspoon plus 3 tablespoons shortening, divided
1 package (10 ounces) Andes creme de menthe baking chips
2 cups white baking chips
1/2 cup crushed peppermint candies

Steps:

  • Line a 13x9-in. pan with foil; grease foil with 1 teaspoon shortening., In a microwave, melt Andes baking chips and 1 tablespoon shortening; stir until smooth. Pour into prepared pan. Refrigerate 10 minutes or until set., In top of a double boiler or a metal bowl over barely simmering water, melt baking chips with remaining shortening; stir until smooth. Spread over chocolate layer; sprinkle with crushed candies. Cool. Refrigerate 2 hours or until firm., Break into small pieces. Store in an airtight container.

⅓ cup coarsely chopped oven-roasted or toasted almonds

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 325 degrees F. Line small baking sheet with foil or parchment paper.
  • Pour morsels onto prepared baking sheet. Arrange morsels so they are touching each other in a single layer (roughly an 11 x 9-inch rectangle).
  • Bake for 1 to 3 minutes or until morsels are shiny. Remove from oven to wire rack. With tip of butter knife or wooden pick, immediately swirl morsels to create a swirled pattern.
  • Sprinkle with nuts. Hold baking sheet 3 inches above counter and drop to settle nuts into melted morsels. Refrigerate for 1 hour or until firm. Break into pieces. Store in airtight container in refrigerator.

12 ounces green candy coating disks
1 teaspoon peppermint extract
2 to 3 candy canes, crushed

Steps:

  • Line a baking sheet with foil; set aside. In a microwave, melt chips; stir until smooth. Spread into a 13-in. x 9-in. rectangle on prepared baking sheet. , In a microwave, melt candy coating; stir until smooth. Stir in extract.
