Short'nin' Bread image

"Mix up the flour, then you'll be fed. Mama's little baby loves shortnin bread." My grandfather used to sing that to me when I was a kid. I'd never seen a recipe for the famed "shortnin bread" until I started digging around for some very old, Southern recipes.

1/2 cup butter, very very soft
1/4 cup brown sugar
1 cup flour

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
  • Cream the butter with the brown sugar. Add the flour a bit at a time until mixed well.
  • Roll out to 1/2-thickness and cut into "ladyfinger"-like slices. Place on a greased pan and bake for 20 minutes or until just beginning to brown. Cool completely.

This recipe will make more of a shortbread cookie that requires very cold milk or a good cup of tea. From the Southern chapter of the United States Regional Cookbook, Culinary Arts Institute of Chicago, 1947.

1 cup light brown sugar
2 cups butter

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350°F.
  • Mix flour and sugar; work in butter.
  • Place on a floured board and pat to 1/2 inch thickness.
  • Cut into desired shapes, place on baking pan and bake for approximately 20 minutes or until golden.
