3/4 cup finely chopped sweet red or green pepper
1/4 cup finely chopped celery
1/2 cup ketchup
1 tablespoon white vinegar
2 teaspoons chili powder
1-1/2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon sugar
1 teaspoon salt
6 hamburger buns, split

Steps:

  • In a large cast-iron or other heavy skillet, cook beef, onion, red pepper and celery over medium heat until meat is no longer pink and vegetables are crisp-tender; drain., In a small bowl, combine the ketchup, vinegar, chili powder, Worcestershire sauce, sugar and salt; stir into beef mixture. Simmer, uncovered, for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Serve on buns.

1 cup diced onion
1 tablespoon tomato paste

2 cups shredded Wine-Braised Brisket
Toasted buns, for serving
Thinly sliced red onion, for serving

Steps:

  • In a skillet, heat oil over medium. Add onion and cook until softened, 3 to 4 minutes. Add tomato paste; stir 1 minute. Add pureed tomatoes, sugar, vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, and 1 cup water. This is weeknight comfort food at its finest. We created a homemade sauce that is tangy and flavorful but also quick and easy. We used both ketchup and canned tomato sauce for lots of tomato-y zip and just a touch of brown sugar for a bit of sweetness and slight caramel finish. Green bell pepper is a key addition; it really enhances the other ingredients, elevating the flavor profile into the realm of a true sloppy joe.

1 medium onion, diced
1 green bell pepper, diced
1 clove garlic, minced
1 pound lean ground beef
12 ounces (1 1/3 cup) tomato sauce
3/4 cup ketchup
2 tablespoons brown sugar
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon yellow mustard
1 tablespoon red wine vinegar
1 teaspoon paprika
Pinch of cayenne pepper
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
6 hamburger buns, toasted

Steps:

  • Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the onions and peppers and cook, stirring occasionally, until softened and starting to caramelize in some spots, 6 to 7 minutes. Add the garlic and cook, stirring, until fragrant, about 1 minute. Stir in the beef and cook, breaking up the meat with a wooden spoon or spatula, until it is browned, no longer pink in the middle and cooked through, 7 to 8 minutes.
  • Stir in the tomato sauce, ketchup, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, red wine vinegar, paprika, cayenne pepper, 1 teaspoon salt and a generous amount of black pepper and simmer, stirring occasionally, until thickened and heated through, 5 to 6 minutes. 1 1/2 pounds ground beef
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
1/2 medium onion, chopped
1 jalapeño, seeded and diced small
1 Fresno chile, seeded and diced small
1 serrano chile, seeded and diced small
3 cloves garlic, minced
2 tablespoons tomato paste
1 cup beef stock or water
3/4 cup ketchup
2 tablespoons balsamic glaze
1 tablespoon brown sugar
1 tablespoon chili powder
1 teaspoon dry mustard
4 slices frozen garlic bread
8 slices provolone cheese
2 tablespoons chopped parsley

Steps:

  • Heat the olive oil in a large pot over medium-high heat. Add the beef and brown, seasoning with a pinch of salt and pepper, 8 to 10 minutes. Drain off all but a couple tablespoons of the fat.
  • Add the onion, chiles, garlic and tomato paste to the pot. Stir and cook for a minute to combine and cook the tomato paste slightly. Add the stock, ketchup, balsamic glaze, brown sugar, chili powder and mustard. Season with another pinch of salt and pepper. Stir to combine, cover and simmer over medium-low heat for 10 to 12 minutes to deepen the flavor.
  • Meanwhile, bake the garlic bread according to the package instructions on a sheet pan lined with foil. Remove from the oven then preheat the broiler.
  • Taste the meat mixture and adjust seasoning as needed. Divide the meat mixture over the top of the baked garlic bread. Next, top each with two slices of the provolone. Broil until the cheese has melted and browned, about 2 minutes.
  • Garnish with the chopped parsley and serve.

1 tbsp olive oil
2 small red onions , chopped
2 garlic cloves , chopped
500g turkey mince
1 tsp ground cumin
1 tsp hot smoked paprika
2 tbsp soft brown sugar
125ml cider vinegar , plus 1 tbsp
500ml passata
75ml low-fat mayonnaise
1 tbsp golden caster sugar
¼ head celeriac , peeled and grated
2 carrots , grated
6 small soft buns

Steps:

  • Heat the oil in a large frying pan. Add half the onions, the garlic and some seasoning, and cook for 5 mins. Add the mince and cook until thoroughly browned. Add the cumin, paprika, brown sugar and the 125ml vinegar, and cook for 5 mins more. Pour in the passata and cook for another 10 mins. Set aside and keep warm.
  • In a mixing bowl, combine the 1 tbsp vinegar, the mayo, a little seasoning and the caster sugar. Add the celeriac, carrots and remaining onions, and mix well. Serve the mince mixture on the buns and top with the celeriac slaw.
