CHOCOLATE ATOLE



Chocolate Atole image

A wonderful, rich, thick drink. Like a cross between hot cocoa and pudding. Can never remember my tweaks to this recipe, so decided to post it. Officially called champurrado, but I call it what I can pronounce.

1 cup cold water
¼ cup masa harina
1 cup milk
¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon
½ cup evaporated milk
1 (2 ounce) bar dark chocolate, chopped
2 tablespoons brown sugar
½ teaspoon vanilla extract

Steps:

  • Whisk water and masa harina together in a saucepan over medium heat. Cook, stirring constantly, until mixture comes to a boil. Add milk and cinnamon. Continue stirring until thick and bubbly. Add evaporated milk, chocolate, brown sugar, and vanilla extract. Cook and stir until chocolate and sugar are just melted, about 2 minutes. Remove from heat and pour into mugs. Serve hot.

Atole is a popular Mexican hot beverage, thickened with masa and flavored with cinnamon and brown sugar. Try this soothing beverage after dinner or in the afternoon with some cookies. You can be creative and add some pureed fruit if you wish!

½ cup masa (corn flour)
5 cups water
1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
5 tablespoons piloncillo, brown sugar cones
1 tablespoon vanilla extract

Steps:

  • Place the masa, water, cinnamon and piloncillo in a blender. Blend until smooth, about 3 minutes.
  • Pour the contents of the blender into a sauce pan and bring the mixture to boil over medium heat, stirring constantly. When the mixture reaches a boil, turn the heat to low and continue to whisk for 5 minutes.
  • Remove the pan from the heat and stir in the vanilla. Pour into mugs and serve hot.

  • Agrega el resto de la leche y, poco antes de que ésta empiece a hervir, incorpora las galletas molidas, moviendo con una cuchara. Cocina a fuego moderado, sin dejar de mover, hasta que la leche hierva. Prueba el atole y, si es necesario, agrega azúcar al gusto.
