Grandma's Buttermilk Syrup image

This was my grandma's most coveted recipe and we had it every time we went there. This is always a special treat and French toast with this syrup is one of my favorite breakfasts!

1 cup white sugar
½ cup buttermilk
½ cup butter
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Steps:

  • Heat sugar, buttermilk, and butter in a saucepan over medium heat until mixture starts to boil, about 5 minutes. Remove saucepan from heat and stir baking soda and vanilla into buttermilk mixture.

This is a great homemade syrup that we found at a little B&B in South Dakota. This syrup is wonderful on hot, fresh blueberry pancakes.

1 ½ cups white sugar
¾ cup buttermilk
½ cup butter
2 tablespoons corn syrup
1 teaspoon baking soda
2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Steps:

  • In a saucepan, stir together the sugar, buttermilk, butter, corn syrup, and baking soda. Bring to a boil, and cook for 7 minutes. Remove from the heat, and stir in the vanilla.

My favourite drink from the Hawker Centre! When you visit any of Singapore's Hawker stalls, look out for a pink coloured drink. That's Bandung. This recipe is really from scratch. This drink is served in glass to show off the pink colour.

Number Of Ingredients 8

3 cups sugar
2 1/2 cups water
1 egg white
1/2 eggshells, slightly crushed (yes, the shell. Make sure you wash the shell first)
cochineal food coloring
rose essence
evaporated milk (my favourite is Carnation Brand)
crushed ice (cubed if preferred.)

Steps:

  • Put the Sugar and Water in a pan and bring to boil.
  • After the sugar has dissolved, add egg white and shell (to clarify syrup).
  • Simmer for half an hour for the syrup to thicken.
  • Strain.
  • Cool.
  • Add a few drops of the food colouring and essence to taste.
  • Dilute 1 part of syrup to 5 parts water (or less if to your liking).
  • Make sure it is slightly sweeter than your preference because you are going to add evaporated milk.
  • Add evaported milk to taste.
  • Perhaps about 2 tbsps for a glass.
  • Add crushed/cubed ice.
  • Enjoy.
