BARBECUED TEMPEH

Barbecued Tempeh image

Barbecue sauce transforms virtuous tempeh into finger-licking comfort food. One of the benefits of homemade barbecue sauce is the ability to adjust the seasonings to suit your own taste. Use the recipe below as a guideline, altering the ingredients as you see fit. (In a pinch, bottled barbecue sauce may be used.) Times are estimated. Time 1h5m

Yield 4 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 11

1 lb tempeh, cut into 1/2-inch-wide strips
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 small yellow onion, minced
1 garlic clove, minced
1 1/2 teaspoons peeled and minced fresh ginger
1 (14 ounce) can crushed tomatoes
1/4 cup unsulphured molasses
1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
3 tablespoons tamari or 3 tablespoons other soy sauce
1 tablespoon rice vinegar
1/8 teaspoon cayenne

Steps:

  • Place the tempeh in a medium-sized saucepan with water to cover, bring to a simmer, and cook for 10 minutes. Drain the tempeh and pat dry. Set aside.
  • Heat the oil in a large skillet or wok over medium heat. Add the tempeh and cook, turning, until browned on both sides, about 5 minutes total. Remove with a slotted spoon and set aside.
  • Add the onion, garlic and ginger to the skillet, cover and cook, stirring a few times, until softened, about 5 minutes.
  • Stir in the tomatoes, molasses, mustard, tamari, vinegar and cayenne and bring to a boil.
  • Reduce the heat to low and simmer, stirring occasionally, to thicken the sauce slightly and develop the flavors, about 15 minutes.
  • Return the tempeh to the sauce and cook for 10 minutes longer, then serve.

Categories     Entree

Time 50m

Number Of Ingredients 8

For the Rub
2 Tbsp. paprika
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. black pepper
3 8 oz. packages of tempeh (I used LightLife brand)
1 Tbsp. olive oil
1//4 tsp. Liquid Smoke (optional)
2 cups barbecue sauce (here is my recipe)

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 400° F.
  • Mix paprika, salt and pepper together.
  • Cut tempeh blocks into three equal strips, lengthwise.
  • Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper and set out tempeh.
  • Coat tempeh with olive oil and then cover with the rub as evenly as possible.
  • If you're using Liquid Smoke mix it in with the barbecue sauce. Brush the sauce over the tempeh, making sure to coat the surface on all sides.
  • Place tempeh in the oven and cook for 40 minutes, rotating the pieces every 10 minutes to ensure cooking on all sides. If the tempeh starts to dry, brush on a bit more barbecue sauce when rotating.

  • Simply slice the tempeh into strips about 1/2″ or so thick and place them in a baking dish. Personally, I always line my baking dishes with parchment sheets for two reasons. One reason is to prevent sticking without using any oil, and the other reason is that they make cleanup a breeze.
  • Next, dice up the onion and sprinkle it over the top of the tempeh and then drizzle bbq sauce over the tempeh and onion covering them well.
  • I like to make my own healthy oil-free bbq sauce because it only takes about 5 minutes and requires only 8 ingredients. However, you can always use your favorite bottled sauce. If you are looking for an oil-free premade barbecue sauce, we love oil-free Bone Suckin’ Sauce.

  • Cut the tempeh into desired pieces, if you want the same as I have pictured, (my tempeh was a long rectangular shape) cut the tempeh in half lengthwise, then cut those pieces in half again. Then filet those pieces in half.
  • While the tempeh is steaming, mix together the rest of the ingredients minus 1 tbs of peanut oil in a dish and set aside. When tempeh is done steaming, add it to the sauce mixture. You can leave it to marinate for an hour or two, or cook it right away.
  • Heat up a large skillet on medium-high heat. Once the pan is nice and hot, add leftover tablespoon of peanut oil then add tempeh and cook for 5-7 minutes, spooning the sauce on each one while it cooks. Flip, then cook for another 5-7 minutes, spooning the sauce on each one again until nicely browned and crisp on each side. I love a little char on these!
