Steps:

  • In a large fry pan or electric fry pan, mix onion with cooked ground beef.
  • In a bowl or measuring cup, mix together remaining ingredients to make a sauce.
  • Pour sauce over ground beef and onion.
  • Cook on medium-high until heated through, stirring occasionally.
  • You can adjust the amount of tomato juice used depending on how runny or dry you like your sloppy joe.

2 tablespoons steak sauce
1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
1 lb ground beef
2 tablespoons butter
8 oz mushrooms, thinly sliced
1 cup white onion, coarsely chopped (from 1 small onion)
1 teaspoon Montreal steak seasoning
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
8 regular-size burger buns, toasted if desired
1/2 cup shredded sharp Cheddar cheese (2 oz)

Steps:

  • In medium bowl, mix broth, steak sauce and mustard; set aside.
  • In 12-inch skillet, cook beef over medium-high heat 7 to 8 minutes, stirring frequently, until browned; drain. Set aside. Add butter to any remaining drippings in skillet; add mushrooms, onion and steak seasoning. Cook 7 to 8 minutes or until onions are translucent and mushrooms are browned.
  • Sprinkle flour over vegetables. Cook 1 to 2 minutes or until flour browns and begins to smell nutty. Return beef to pan, and stir in broth mixture. Return to simmering; cook 3 to 4 minutes or until thickened. Place about 1/3 cup mixture over bottom of each bun, top with 1 tablespoon cheese, then top bun.

2 tablespoons dried minced onion
1 (12 ounce) bottle chili sauce (such as Heinz®)
2 ½ tablespoons brown sugar
1 tablespoon water, or as needed
½ cup salted butter, softened, or as needed
16 slices bread
16 slices American cheese

Steps:

  • Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Cook and stir ground beef and minced in the hot skillet until browned and crumbly, 5 to 7 minutes.
  • Add chili sauce and brown sugar. Rinse chili sauce jar with water to get the remnants of the sauce; add to the beef mixture. Stir, reduce heat, and simmer for 10 to 15 minutes. Remove from the heat.
  • Butter one side of 2 slices of bread. Place one slice, butter-side down, in a new skillet over medium heat. Layer with 1 slice of American cheese, a scoop of Sloppy Joe mixture, another slice of cheese, and the second piece of bread, butter-side up. This came from the LDS book "Especially for Mormons." There is a story that goes with it. This high school age girl invited friends over for a party. She asked the housekeeper (!) to fix them something really good for she considered these kids to be the creme de la creme. Well the housekeeper fixed this recipe because she knew the girl liked it so very well. When it came time to eat, the girl became very embarrassed, thinking of giving this plain food to her friends. Well, wouldn't you know, the gang loved this dish and complemented it and the girl over and over! This is another version of a sloppy Joe. I find it to be pretty sweet, but not too sweet. Not being all that familiar with sloppies, I think it is worthy of lots of complements, too. I even call the sandwiches "Sloppy Minnies."
