EASIEST ANIMAL CRACKERS RECIPE
If you use larger cookie cutters, you may need to bake on the longer end of the baking time-and mini cookie cutters on the shorter end. This makes a relatively small batch, so double it if you want extras to last all week!

Steps:
- Preheat the oven to 375°F and line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
- Place all ingredients into a bowl and use your hand to mix together to form a dough. (If the dough is a little crumbly, be sure that it's throughly combined and then if it's still crumbly, add 1/2-1 tablespoon additional milk until it comes together.)
- Make a flattened disc of dough.
- Roll the dough ¼-inch thick between two pieces of lightly floured pieces of parchment paper. (The flour will ensure that the cut outs are easy to move.)
- Cut out the dough with a cookie cutter and transfer to the prepared baking sheets. Bake for 7-9 minutes, until lightly browned around the edges.
- Remove from the oven, let cool on the baking sheet for a minute, and transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Steps:
- Whisk flour, baking powder, mace, allspice, and ginger together in a medium bowl; set aside.
- In bowl of a stand mixer fitted with paddle attachment, beat butter, shortening, and sugar together on medium speed for about 3 minutes, until shiny, fluffy, and creamy. Add egg and vanilla and stir on low speed until fully incorporated. Gradually add flour and spice mixture until fully incorporated into soft dough.
- Pat dough into a ball and wrap in plastic wrap. Chill for at least 1 hour; flavor of dough improves as it's chilled, so chill overnight for best results. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F and line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper or Silpat liners.
- Divide chilled dough into 4 pieces. On a floured surface, gently roll one of the pieces to a 1/4 to 1/2-inch thickness. (Keep remaining pieces refrigerated.) Use floured cookie cutters to stamp out shapes (lions and tigers and bears?) and carefully transfer cookies to a prepared baking sheet, using a cookie spatula or turner if necessary. Save scraps for re-rolling.
- Bake for 12 to 15 minutes, until cookies are puffy and golden brown at edges. Transfer cookies to a wire rack to cool completely. Repeat with remaining dough. Scraps can be re-rolled once to make additional cookies.
- Store cookies at room temperature in an airtight container for up to a week.

Although I am a yet a toddler I've been feeling nostalgic lately! Every year at Christmas, we receive (Daddy included!) a box of Barnum's Animal Crackers in our stockings! Did you know that the Barnum's Animal Cracker box was originally designed to hang on the Christmas tree, hence the reason for the string attached to the box? - *Note: I found it easier to slice off a small section on the back of the strawberries (meaning from the stem to the bottom of the berry.) That way it will lay flat on the plate and easier to attach the chocolate chips. They won't be so wobbly. Ask an adult for help.
- HEAD: Place a grape on a toothpick or wooden skewer, sliding it all the way to the end of the stick.
- BODY: Next place the strawberry on the skewer, stem end first, and slide it down to touch the grape.
- SPOTS: Lay the ladybug down and carefully push the pointed ends of several chocolate chips (or dried currants) into the strawberry to make the ladybug's spots.
- PRESENTATION: Place several large lettuce leaves (or paper leaves or Easter grass) on a pretty platter. Arrange the ladybugs on the leaves.
