APPLE SLICES BROWN BETTY
Sliced tart apples are layered with spiced bread crumbs and brown sugar, and topped with butter and applesauce, in this easy baked dessert.

Steps:
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
- In a small bowl, combine bread crumbs, brown sugar, 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon and cloves. Place half of the sliced apples in a 9x13 inch baking dish. Top with half the bread crumb mixture. Repeat layers. Pour melted butter over all and cover with applesauce. Combine remaining cinnamon with white sugar and sprinkle on top.
- Bake in preheated oven 1 hour, until apples are tender and mixture is bubbly.

Steps:
- Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Lightly grease a 9 inch pie plate.
- Mound sliced apples in the pie plate. Sprinkle with orange juice.
- In a medium bowl, mix the flour, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Cut in butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Scatter over the apples.
- Bake in preheated oven for 45 minutes. Serve warm.

- Place apples in an ungreased 4- or 5-qt. slow cooker. In a large bowl, combine the bread, brown sugar, butter, extract, cinnamon, cardamom and salt; spoon over apples. Cover and cook on low 3-4 hours, until apples are tender., In a small bowl, beat cream until it begins to thicken. Add the sugar, lemon zest and extract; beat until soft peaks form. Serve with apple mixture.

BETTY'S SOUR CREAM SUGAR COOKIES
These are a favorite cookie from my childhood that my Mom Betty made alot less frequently. She was a fabulous cook and baker. I did not appreciate all the work rolled out cookies took vs drop or other easier methods till I was grown. My daughter loves these and like my Mom I don't make them every year. While I've found easier recipes that imitate some other time consuming ones, I've never tasted any cookie that comes close to these. I usually made them as trees and sprinkled with green sugar. I occasionally made them for Valentines Day in heart shape with red sprinkles.

Steps:
- Mix shortening, butter, sugar, eggs and vanilla thoroughly in a large bowl Blend the flour, baking powder, soda, salt and nutmeg all together in another bowl.
- Add flour mixture to sugar mixture alternating with sour cream. It will be somewhat stiff at end.
- Divide dough and roll out 1/4 inch thick on well floured surface.
- Cut with 2" cutter and place on greased cookie sheets.
- Sprinkle with sugar.
- Bake at 425°F for 8-10 minutes, or till lightly browned.Depending on the size of the cookie you may need to adjust the baking time. Also be sure and clean off the excess sugar after each batch or will burn onto sheet,and burn bottom of cookies with high heat baking.

APPLE SLICE WITH CREAMY TOPPING
I didn't believe the recipe when my friend Lesley gave it to me, but having tasted the slice, and loving it, I tried it and had sucess the first time I made it, eveyone loved it. The family call it my "stolen apple slice" It freezes very well!! UPDATE Jubes used a gluten free cake mix, and reports that it turned out very well. Nice dessert for those people that cant tolerate gluten!

Steps:
- Mix first 3 ingredients together: Press into slice tin, (lined with baking paper) and cook in a moderate oven 20-25 minutes, til very lightly browned.
- Cool for 10 minutes and then spread cooked apple carefully over base.
- Pour over about 400gr light sour cream, spread out with the back of a spoon.
- Sprinkle with cinnamon and bake a further 10 to 15 minutes.
- Hints: You'll need to cook about a kilo of Granny Smiths for this, (or use canned apples, but NOT the ones without sugar.) Peel and slice your apples and cook with 1/2 cup water, and sugar to taste.
- Drain and cool before use.
- Be generous with the baking paper, it makes it easier to lift the slice out of the tin.
- Cut the slice when it is cold.
- Nice warm too, but cut in the tin.
