BROILED GRAPEFRUITS WITH HONEY AND COCONUT SUGAR

Broiled Grapefruits with Honey and Coconut Sugar image

Provided by Sarah Walker Caron

Time 15m

Number Of Ingredients 4

2 ruby red grapefruits
8 tsp honey, , divided
cinnamon, , to taste
coconut sugar, , to taste

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to broil. Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil (for easier clean up!).
  • Cut each grapefruit in half. If desired, you can also cut a small slice from the bottom of the grapefruit to make them lie flat. I didn't do this because these sat fine without it. Using a paring knife, carefully cut between the wedges in the grapefruit. This will make for easier eating later.
  • Place the grapefruit halves on the baking sheet. Drizzle each with 2 teaspoons of honey and your desired amount of cinnamon and coconut sugar.
  • Slide the baking sheet into the oven. The rack should be set about 4-inches from the broiler element. Cook for 8-10 minutes, or until slightly browned. Let cool for a few minutes before serving -- and be sure to spoon any honey mixture left on the tray on top of the hot grapefruits. Enjoy!

BROILED GRAPEFRUIT

BROILED GRAPEFRUIT image

Fun and easy, this healthy broiled grapefruit can be served for a light breakfast or at any time of the day as a snack or dessert!

Provided by Julie | The Simple Veganista

Categories     Breakfast

Time 15m

Number Of Ingredients 7

2 grapefruit, red or yellow
2 tablespoons sugar (coconut, brown, raw, or pure cane), divided
2 tablespoons coconut oil, vegan butter or pure maple syrup, divided
1 teaspoon ground ginger or finely grated ginger, divided
salt, to taste
shredded unsweetened coconut (add after the first two or three minutes)
dash of cinnamon

Steps:

  • Preheat broiler. You can alternately use a toaster oven for this using a high temp.
  • Prep grapefruit: Slice grapefruits in half. You may have to slice a tad bit off the bottom if your grapefruits don't stand straight. Use a grapefruit knife or a serrated paring knife and cut each segment so the pink flesh is cut away from the membrane. Next, gently par around the whole outside area of flesh cutting away from the rind. It will make your grapefruit eating a little easier and less messy.
  • Assemble: Place each half, cut side up, on a rimmed cookie sheet or baking dish. Top each half with 1 teaspoon or so of coconut oil, 1 teaspoon or so of sugar, and a generous pinch of ginger. Use your fingers to blend and spread the ginger on the grapefruit halves.
  • Broil: Place under the broiler and cook anywhere from 4 - 7 minutes. I find it best to set your timer for 2 minutes, check grapefruit, if sugar is not caramelized or there is no excessive charring of the grapefruit rind (white part), add another minute and repeat the process until sugar is caramelized and rind is gently colored but not overly burnt all around. If using shredded coconut, sprinkle on top of the grapefruit halves after the first 2 minutes. Once done, sprinkle with salt.
  • Serve: Enjoy right away or let cool and serve at room temp.

COCONUT GINGER BROILED GRAPEFRUIT

Coconut Ginger Broiled Grapefruit image

Fresh ginger and coconut sugar top grapefruit halves and are broiled until caramelized and unbelievably delicious. Top with toasted coconut to take them over the top. Perfect for a special breakfast or brunch, but also ideal as a healthy(ish) dessert!

Provided by Kare for Kitchen Treaty

Time 15m

Number Of Ingredients 4

1/2 cup dried coconut chips or shredded coconut
2 grapefruits (I like Texas Rio or other Texas grapefruits for their sweetness)
1/4 cup plus 4 teaspoons coconut sugar (divided)
2 teaspoons grated fresh ginger

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 325 degrees Fahrenheit. Spread coconut on a cookie sheet and bake, stirring occasionally, until golden brown and fragrant, about 5-6 minutes. Remove from oven and set aside.
  • Heat oven broiler on high. Cut your grapefruits in half and place them cut-side-up on a rimmed cookie sheet. If they do not sit flat, cut a little off of the bottoms of the halves to create a flat surface.
  • Place 1/4 cup coconut sugar in a small bowl. Add the ginger and rub the ginger into the sugar with your fingers.
  • Crumble the gingered sugar evenly over each grapefruit half. Sprinkle 1 additional teaspoon coconut sugar over the tops of each half, taking care to cover any spots couldn't cover with the gingered sugar. Place in oven directly under broiler and broil until the sugar is bubble, melted, and golden in spots, about 5 minutes (but the time can really vary depending on your oven, so keep an eye on them from the get go and know it could take anywhere from 2 - 8 minutes).
  • Remove from oven and sprinkle each half with the toasted coconut. Serve with spoons (serrated grapefruit spoons are great if you have them!)

Provided by The Wanderlust Kitchen

Number Of Ingredients 3

One grapefruit cut in half (through the middle of the grapefruit)
One Tablespoon of Mint leaves cut into strips
Two Tablespoons of coconut flakes

Steps:

  • Put your oven on broil.
  • So that the grapefruit sits flat, cut 1/4 inch off of the bottom of each grapefruit half.
  • Line a baking sheet with foil.
  • Put the grapefruit halves onto the baking sheet and broil for about 5 minutes or until done to your liking.
  • Spread the coconut flakes out into one layer in a small oven dish. Place them into the oven for 1-2 minutes until they are toasted to your liking. You will need to watch them as they toast quickly.
  • When the grapefruit and coconut are done, remove them from the oven.
  • Put each grapefruit half onto a plate and then sprinkle on the toasted coconut and mint.
  • Enjoy!

BROILED GRAPEFRUIT WITH BROWN SUGAR AND FLAKY SALT

Broiled Grapefruit With Brown Sugar and Flaky Salt image

A classic at a fancy breakfast or brunch, the best broiled grapefruits have a glossy caramelized topping covering sections of the warm, juicy citrus. This recipe also includes a little cinnamon for a heady fragrance, and a touch of sea salt, which softens the bitterness of the grapefruit peel. It's best served warm from the oven, when the brown sugar is still melted and syrupy. Ruby or pink grapefruits make for the prettiest presentation, but white ones work just as well, and have a livelier, more acidic flavor.

Provided by Melissa Clark

Categories     breakfast, brunch

Time 10m

Yield 4 servings

Number Of Ingredients 6

2 grapefruits, preferably pink or ruby
4 tablespoons light brown sugar
2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
Honey, for drizzling
Ground cinnamon (optional)
Flaky sea salt, for serving

Steps:

  • Move the rack 4 inches away from the broiler, and turn it on.
  • Halve the grapefruits through their equators. Using a paring knife or a grapefruit knife, cut the sections away from the membranes and pith so they are easy to spoon up. Place grapefruit halves, cut-side up, on a baking sheet. Sprinkle each grapefruit half with 1 tablespoon brown sugar, then drizzle with melted butter and a little honey. Sprinkle cinnamon over the tops if you like.
  • Broil grapefruit until the sugar melts and caramelizes, 2 to 5 minutes. (Broilers vary a lot so watch carefully to make sure they don't burn.) Sprinkle with flaky sea salt, and serve immediately.
