1 1/2 lbs ground Angus beef
3 tbsp plain breadcrumbs (fine, dry)
2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
2 tbsp onion (grated or finely chopped)
1/2 tsp garlic powder (optional)
2 tbsp tomato juice
salt (to taste)
freshly ground black pepper (to taste)
burger buns
sliced tomatoes
sliced pickles
sliced onion
lettuce
mustard or ketchup

Steps:

  • In a bowl, mix all ingredients except the toppings.
  • Line your baking sheet with parchment paper. Place a cooling rack on top of it.
  • Form small balls then flatten them. Arrange them on the oven rack, at least an inch apart.
  • Bake at 350° F for 20 minutes or until it reaches 160° F. Read the burger temperature guidelines according to preferred doneness.

Duke's Grill in Monroe has had a Carolina burger on its menu since 1951, but the favorite is all over the region now: Wendy's added it to the menu in North and South Carolina locations in 2019!

2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1/2 yellow onion, chopped
1 tablespoon tomato paste
2 tablespoons chili powder
1 teaspoon ground cumin
1 teaspoon dried oregano
2 teaspoons packed dark brown sugar
2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
1 pound ground beef
Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper
3/4 cup canned crushed tomatoes
3 tablespoons mayonnaise
2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
1 1/2 teaspoons granulated sugar
2 cups shredded coleslaw mix
Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper
1 pound ground beef
Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
4 slices cheddar cheese
1/4 cup yellow mustard
4 sesame hamburger buns
1/2 white onion, chopped

Steps:

  • Make the chili: Heat the vegetable oil in a medium saucepan over medium-high heat. Add the yellow onion and cook, stirring, until softened, about 5 minutes. Add the tomato paste, chili powder, cumin, oregano, brown sugar and Worcestershire sauce. Cook, stirring, until the onion is coated, about 2 minutes.
  • Add the beef, 1/2 teaspoon salt and a few grinds of pepper to the pan and continue to cook, stirring, until the beef is no longer pink, 3 to 4 minutes. Add the tomatoes, 1/2 cup water and a pinch of salt. Bring to a simmer and cook, stirring occasionally, until the chili is thickened, 15 to 20 minutes. Season with salt.
  • Meanwhile, make the slaw: Whisk the mayonnaise, vinegar and granulated sugar in a medium bowl. Add the coleslaw mix and toss to coat; season with salt and pepper.
  • Make the burgers: Mix the beef with 1/2 teaspoon each salt and pepper in a large bowl. Form into four 4-inch-wide patties (about 1/2 inch thick). Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the burgers and cook until browned, 2 to 3 minutes per side for medium, topping each patty with a slice of cheese in the last 2 minutes of cooking.
  • Spread the mustard on the bottoms of the buns. Serve the burgers on the buns and top with the chili, white onion and slaw.

1/2 cup shredded four-cheese blend or cheddar cheese
1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
4 slices cheddar cheese
hamburger buns
lettuce

Steps:

  • Place the ground beef, salt, pepper, smoked paprika, bbq sauce, cheese, and Worchestire sauce into a medium mixing bowl and mix together until combined. Form into 4 patties.
  • Place the patties into a pan or onto the grill and cook to liking. Add the cheddar cheese on top and melt.
  • Once cheese has melted, remove the burgers from pan or grill.
  • Grill the hamburger buns.
  • Serve each burger on a hamburger bun with lettuce and additional Heinz BBQ Carolina Vinegar Style Tangy.
