This was given to me by a friend of the family when I was in my teens and I would go over to her place and clean to get extra cash and this was her "Church Cake" that she would take all the time. I was lucky enought to get her box of recipes from her son when she pasted away and found out that this had been pased down from the...

Number Of Ingredients 8

1/2 tsp baking soda
20 Tbsp butter
2 1/2 c sugar
3 c cake flour
1 c whole milk
1 tsp vanilla
1 tsp salt
6 eggs

Steps:

  • 1. Cream the butter and sugar. Add the eggs in one at a time untill well mixed.
  • 2. In a seprate bowl mix flour, salt, baking soda together. In a seprate bowl mix the vanilla and milk togeher.
  • 3. On medium speed alternating flour mix and milk mix add them to the butter/suger mix till it is well blended.
  • 4. Take a well greesed angel food pan and pour batter evenly. Place the pan in a COLD OVEN and then turn it on to 325 and cook for 60 to 85 min.
  • 5. It will be done when a cake tester or tooth pick comes out clean. Can be served hot, warm, cold, as is, with powdered sugar, icing, frosing, taking jam and heating it then pouring it over the cake, topings can be unlimiting

  • Hasty Pudding. If you’ve ever been curious what a mushy mixture of cornmeal and water tastes like, give hasty pudding a try. It originated before the Civil War, but became especially popular during the era due to the restrictions the war placed on everyday cooks.
  • Chicken Pie. Anne Howe’s 1863 classic The American Kitchen Directory and Housewife includes quite a few culinary gems, like plaw (a Civil War era veal curry), pressed pig’s head, oyster pancakes, and a dish of snow (grated coconut with cream).

  • Shoofly pie. A pie so popular that it inspired a song (Shoo fly, don't bother me….") , this treat dates to the 1800s in Pennsylvania Dutch country. The dessert got its name because it was so appealing, both in looks and scent, that it attracted flies.
  • Baked Alaska. A dessert that would melt hearts and impress a mother-in-law or birthday celebrant, Baked Alaska used to show up on restaurant menus as a special shared dessert but not so much anymore—except for old-school restaurants like Delmonico's in NYC, which is said to have invented the dish to celebrate the US acquisition of Alaska in 1867.
  • Bananas Foster. Another flamboyant dessert, boozy Bananas Foster was invented in the early '50s at Brennan's restaurant in jazzy New Orleans.   • Vienna Sponge Cake. Beat the whites of twenty-eight eggs very stiff (it is best to use it two or three days old); add by handfuls one pound of powdered sugar, then the yolks of twenty-eight eggs, and last one pound of fine cake flour; mix as light as possible; bake quick in deep, square mould.
  • Pound Cake. One pound of powdered sugar and one pound of good dry butter, rubbed to cream; add slowly, one at a time, ten eggs, which you beat a little first, and in warm weather, keep in ice water; then mix in one pound (good weight) of pastry flour, mace and vanilla.
  • American Sponge Cake. Beat up one pound of powdered sugar with twelve eggs, set in hot water bath until warm, beat until it does not run down quick from the beater, when raised; then add lightly one pound of pastry flour, sifted, with one-half of an ounce of baking powder.
