DH'S BASIL AND LEMON BALM TEA FOR COLD RELIEF OR JUST DRINKING

Dh's Basil and Lemon Balm Tea for Cold Relief or Just Drinking image

My Dear Husband came up with this one winter when we caught head cold after head cold. Its especially soothing on a sore throat and as good as chicken soup for steaming open clogged sinuses. With or without the optional slug of whiskey or brandy it makes a head cold less unpleasant to cope with. And its tasty enough that you'll probably brew up a pot at other times too.

Provided by 3KillerBs

Categories     Beverages

Time 11m

Yield 1 cup

Number Of Ingredients 5

1/2 cup dried basil
1/2 cup dried lemon balm
honey (optional)
whiskey (optional) or brandy (optional)
boiling water

Steps:

  • Mix basil with lemon balm.
  • To brew tea, place the same amount of the mix as you would use for black tea into a tea ball. Put into your teapot and fill with boiling water. Let steep for 5-7 minutes.
  • Serve hot, sweetening with honey if desired.
  • Note -- Its traditional to add a shot of whiskey or brandy to your tea when you have a head cold, but DON'T do it if you're taking ANY cold medicine -- prescription or OTC!
  • Note -- "Cooking" time is boiling the water and brewing.

8 BENEFITS OF LEMON BASIL TEA THAT ARE UNDENIABLE

From plantbasedfaqs.com
  • Immune Boosting Vitamin C. Citrus fruits like lemon are well-known for their high vitamin C content, a water-soluble vitamin and powerful antioxidant that can help strengthen the immune system, protect against heart disease, lower LDL (“bad”) cholesterol and triglycerides.
  • Supporting Weight Loss. One of the reasons that so many have started the lemon water habit is to prevent weight gain or to help support weight loss efforts.
  • Better Digestion. While lemon is acidic, in the body it promotes an alkaline pH which can aid digestion and help break food down more efficiently. That makes it easier for the body to extract the maximum amount of nutrients from the meals you’re consuming.
  • Prevent Bloating. Lemon is considered a mild diuretic, which means it encourages healthy elimination of water through your urine which can prevent bloating and water retention, including that “water weight gain.”
  • Managing Blood Sugar Levels. Enjoying the benefits of lemon basil tea by drinking it (without any form of sugar added) instead of soda or other high-sugar beverages will obviously help reduce blood sugar levels as you’ll be reducing your sugar intake.
  • Lower Cortisol Levels. The effects of holy basil on blood sugar may come thanks, at least in part, to its ability to aid in regulating cortisol levels.
  • Better Oral Health – and Better Breath. Lemon basil tea also packs a punch when it comes to improving oral health and your breath. Lemon has been found in scientific research to contain antimicrobial and phytochemical properties in addition to antioxidants that work together to help kill bacteria while reducing inflammation in the mouth.
  • Enhancing Immune Boosting and Cancer-fighting Benefits. While lemon helps to keep your immune system strong and may reduce your risk of many cancers, basil also brings some potent immune boosting and cancer-fighting benefits.
