Homemade Applesauce Recipe (Gluten-Free, Vegan) image

Making your own homemade applesauce cannot get any easier than this! All you need is 4 ingredients and 30 minutes to get smooth, tasty applesauce that's slightly sweetened with a hint of cinnamon! Naturally gluten-free, dairy-free and vegan too.

5 medium apples, peeled, cored, and cubed (see recipe notes for types of apples to use)
1/4 cup sugar (optional, leave out if you prefer unsweetened)
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional)
1 cup water, plus more if necessary

Steps:

  • Peel, core, and cut the apples into small cubes.
  • Combine the cubed apples, sugar, cinnamon, and water in a large skillet. Mix well and bring to a boil, before reducing heat to medium and covering the skillet.
  • Let the apples cook for approximately 20 minutes, until they are soft and translucent and can easily be mashed with a fork or a slotted spoon.
  • Transfer the apples to a high-speed blender or food processor and blend until smooth (skip this step if you prefer a chunkier applesauce).

Number Of Ingredients 2

6 lbs. Apples
1 1/2 cups Water (divided)

Steps:

  • Peel, core and chop the apples. (I love the corer slicer combo. Makes it so much easier. (affiliate link))
  • Place peels in medium pot with 1/2 cup water.
  • Place apples in large pot with 1 cup water.
  • Cover and cook each on medium high for 10 - 15 minutes, stirring ever few minutes, until it is the mushy-ness you want.
  • Use a potato masher (pictured above) and mash the apples.
  • Use a blender or food processor to blend up the peels.
  • Mix the two parts together. The peel give extra flavor and sweetness to your applesauce. So yummy!

  • In a Dutch oven, combine apples, brown sugar and cinnamon. Cover and cook over medium-low heat 30-40 minutes or until apples are tender, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat; stir in vanilla. Mash apples slightly if desired. Serve warm or cold.

7 medium McIntosh, Empire or other apples (about 3 pounds)
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup water
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1/4 teaspoon almond or vanilla extract

Steps:

  • Peel, core and cut each apple into 8 wedges. Cut each wedge crosswise in half; place in a large saucepan. Add remaining ingredients., Bring to a boil. Reduce heat; simmer, covered, until desired consistency is reached, 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally.

3/4 cup raisins
1 cup hot water
1/2 cup shortening
2 cups sugar
1 large egg
2-1/2 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon each ground cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg
1-1/2 cups applesauce
1/2 cup water
1/2 cup chopped walnuts
Confectioners' sugar, optional

Steps:

  • Place raisins and hot water in a small bowl; set aside. , In a large bowl, cream shortening and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in egg. Combine the flour, baking soda, salt and spices; add to creamed mixture alternately with applesauce and water. Drain raisins; fold into batter with the walnuts. , Transfer to a greased 13x9-in. baking pan. Bake at 300° for 40 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Place pan on a wire rack. Dust with confectioners' sugar if desired. Serve warm or cold.
