- In a small saucepan, bring the sugar and water to a boil. Remove from the heat. Stir in the basil, spearmint and cinnamon stick. Cover and refrigerate overnight., Discard the herbs and cinnamon stick from syrup. In a serving bowl, combine the fruit. Drizzle with syrup; gently toss to coat. Cover and refrigerate until chilled. Serve with a slotted spoon.

FRESH FRUIT SALAD
I was looking for a light meal for brunch and decided to toss every type of fruit I had in the house into a yogurt-based salad for lunch. It went over well with my lunch guest who is a fussy eater. My sister actually asked for seconds. The nice thing about this is you make what you need at the time and don't have to bother with leftovers. However, it does keep well for a few days as long as it is refrigerated. Serve in individual dishes with crackers.

This is a sweet fruit salad intended to be served as a low-fat dessert. The syrup is essential; without it, you just have an ordinary fruit salad, for which you probably don't need a recipe! You can vary the fruits to use what you have on hand. This is especially good with strawberries and melon. Bananas might be too overpowering, though.

- Place the sugar, water, lemon zest, cinnamon, and 2 tablespoons of lemon juice into a small saucepan. Bring to a boil; reduce heat to medium-low and simmer 10 minutes. Strain the syrup through a mesh strainer; refrigerate until cold.
- Place the mango, peaches, apple, raspberries, mint, and 2 tablespoons of lemon juice into a mixing bowl. Pour the chilled syrup overtop and gently stir to combine.

FRUIT SALAD WITH CARDAMOM AND NUTMEG
For breakfast, lunch or dinner! A combination of fresh and canned fruit with complimentary spices and a wee bit of no fat sour cream. Nice light lunch. Chill time not included in timing.

Steps:
- In a large bowl add banana, apple and grapefruit, gently stir to mix.
- Add the orange segments and peaches with their juice.
- Add the pineapple, reserve the juice.
- Stir to mix.
- Add enough of the pineapple juice to nearly cover all of the fruit; squeeze the lime juice over all and gently stir to mix.
- Sprinkle the cardamom, through a sifter over all then grate the nutmeg over the fruit, add a pinch of salt; stir gently to mix.
- Place the no fat sour cream in the centre on top of the fruit.
- Cover lightly with plastic wrap and chill for 30 minutes or up to 1 hour.
- Serve with a muffin or toast and enjoy!
