Glögg (Swedish Mulled Wine) image

A warming mulled wine, perfect for Holiday parties!

½ c sugar, (or to taste)
½ c water
1 750 mL bottle dry red wine, (Cabernet Sauvignon works well)
1 750 mL bottle Port wine
1 c brandy
1 c raisins
1 c blanched almonds*
Peel of ½ orange
2 slices fresh ginger, peeled
10 cardamom pods, crushed
2 cinnamon sticks
8 whole cloves

Steps:

  • Heat sugar and water in a large saucepan until it has dissolved.
  • Add liquor, raisins, and almonds. Tie the spices and peel in a square of cheesecloth (or place in a tea ball) and place into the mixture.
  • Heat the mixture over medium-low heat until it begins to steam (do not let it boil), 30-40 min.
  • Taste and add more sugar if you would like, dissolving ¼ c sugar in ¼ c water at a time.
  • When the mixture is warm, remove the spices and serve it immediately, making sure to float some almonds and raisins in each glass. '
  • Alternately, remove the almonds and raisins and place the glögg into jars (or bottles). Store in the refrigerator to be used within 1-2 weeks.

1 bottle (750 ml) fruity red wine
1 cup brandy
1 cup sugar
1 medium orange, sliced
1 medium lemon, sliced
1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
2 cinnamon sticks (3 inches)
1/2 teaspoon whole allspice
1/2 teaspoon aniseed
1/2 teaspoon whole peppercorns
3 whole cloves
Optional garnishes: Orange slices, star anise and additional cinnamon sticks

Steps:

  • In a large saucepan, combine the first 6 ingredients. Place remaining spices on a double thickness of cheesecloth. Gather corners of cloth to enclose spices; tie securely with string. Place in pan., Bring to a boil, stirring occasionally. Reduce heat; simmer gently, covered, 20 minutes. Transfer to a covered container; cool slightly. Refrigerate, covered, overnight., Strain wine mixture into a large saucepan, discarding fruit and spice bag; reheat. Serve warm. Garnish as desired.

750 ml red wine
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 orange rind
3 cinnamon sticks
20 cloves
4 cardamom pods
1/2 cup brandy
1/2 cup kirsch liqueur

Steps:

  • Slightly bruise the cardamom pods and cinnamon sticks and place in a pan with the wine sugar orange rind and cloves.
  • Heat gently but do not allow to boil for 30mins.
  • Take of heat and let step for a few hours.
  • Reheat and add the brandy or kirsch, strain into cups.

  • Remove the peel from the orange using a vegetable peeler and transfer peel strips to a medium saucepan. Cut orange in half and squeeze juice into the saucepan with the peel.
  • Add all remaining ingredients to the saucepan and heat until mixture just comes to a simmer. Cover and remove from heat. Let steep for two to four hours at room temperature. Strain into a clean container. Mixture can be prepared up until this point up to a week ahead and stored covered in the refrigerator until ready to use.
  • When you are ready to serve, return mixture to a saucepan. Add aquavit and a handful of golden raisins. Heat but do not boil (boiling will remove the alcohol). Serve immediately garnished with raisins, blanched almonds and orange or clementine slices if desired.
