HAMBURGER CAKE
This is a wonderful cake that looks just like a giant hamburger. I made one for my nephew and it was a delightful hit.

Steps:
- Preheat oven according to cake mix directions. Butter and flour one 8 inch round and one 9 inch round cake pan and one 2 quart ovenproof bowl 8 inches in diameter.
- Prepare cake mixes. Pour 1 3/4 cups of the white mix into the 8 inch round cake pan, and the rest into the 2 quart bowl. Pour 1 3/4 cups of the chocolate mix into the 9 inch round pan.
- Bake 8 inch cake for 25 minutes, 9 inch cake for 20 minutes and bowl cake for 1 hour or until toothpick inserted into centers comes out clean. Cool in pans on racks 10 minutes. Remove from pans; cool completely on racks.
- In separate small bowls, tint small amounts of vanilla frosting red and yellow, to use as ketchup and mustard. Tint remaining vanilla frosting light brown, using brown and yellow food coloring.
- For bun bottom, frost the 8 inch cake with light brown frosting.
- For hamburger patty, spread top and sides of 9 inch chocolate cake with chocolate frosting Lightly press all around sides of cake with folded paper towel, pulling towel straight out to create rough edge of burger. center cake on top of bun bottom.
- For cheese, arrange orange fruit chews in single layer on microwave-safe plate. Microwave on High 10-15 seconds or until slightly softened. With hands, press and flatten chews together to form 9 inch square. Place on top of hamburger patty. On work surface sprinkled with granulated sugar roll out 5 leaf-shaped gumdrops to 1/8 inch thickness to form 1 large lettuce leaf; repeat rolling with 6 more gumdrops to form another leaf. Arrange over cheese near edges of burger. For tomatoes, roll out red gumdrops individually to 1/8 inch thickness. Arrange over lettuce around burger edges. For onion rings, roll out white gumdrops to 1/8 inch thickness. With round cookie cutters or sharp knife cut out circles; cut 1/4 inch thick rings from circles with small cutters. Re-roll scraps to make additional rings; arrange rings over tomatoes. Arrange fruit-slice candies over onions for pickles. Pipe red and yellow icing around edges of burger for ketchup and mustard.
- For bun top: If necessary, trim bowl cake so that it will be flat on the bottom when inverted. Invert firm paper plate onto work surface. Center bowl cake, trimmed side down, on top of plate. Starting from the top, spread remaining light brown frosting in lines down sides of cake, turning plate after each section. Sprinkle with sesame seeds. Carefully place on top of the cake.

Steps:
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Spray a 2 1/2-quart ovenproof bowl and two 8-inch-round cake pans with cooking spray. Beat the cake mix, eggs, buttermilk and vegetable oil in a large bowl with a mixer.
- Divide the batter among the bowl and pans; bake until a toothpick comes out clean, about 25 minutes for the pans and about 45 minutes for the bowl. Cool in the pans 15 minutes, then unmold onto racks.
- Make the lettuce: Sprinkle some green or white sugar on a cutting board. Roll out the spearmint candies to 1/8 inch thick with a rolling pin, sprinkling with more sugar to keep the candies from sticking.
- Cut each flattened gummy piece into 3 strips. Fold each strip accordion-style to make ruffles; pinch the ends together.
- Make the cheese: Roll out the orange fondant on a cornstarch-dusted surface to about 1/8 inch thick. Trim the fondant into a 7-inch square; cover with plastic wrap and set aside.
- Trim the top of 1 round cake and the flat side of the bowl cake to make them level; crumble the trimmings. Mix the vanilla frosting, 4 tablespoons chocolate frosting and the yellow and red food coloring in a bowl to make a light brown frosting.
- Make the bottom bun: Put the trimmed round cake on a serving plate or cake board. Frost with some of the light brown frosting. Arrange the gummy-candy ruffles around the edge of the cake.
- Make the patty: Spread the remaining chocolate frosting over the top and sides of the untrimmed round cake. Press the crumbled cake trimmings into the frosting.
- Assemble the burger: Put the chocolate patty on the bottom bun, then drape the orange fondant on top. Frost the bowl-shaped cake with the remaining light brown frosting; place on the patty. Press the rice cereal into the frosting.
HAMBURGER PATTIES
Perfect burgers every time! There is quite a debate about the origin of the popular American hamburger. I will side with the Wisconsin theory, and attribute this recipe to the Midwest U.S. region.

Steps:
- Sometimes I vary the seasonings- using a steak seasoning or Cajun seasoning instead of salt and pepper.
- Mix ingredients with your hands using a light touch.
- Don't be tempted to overmix.
- If you do, it becomes too dense.
- When charcoal grilling, add 1/2 cup water to the beef mixture to keep it from drying out.
- For pan frying, don't use a nonstick pan- it won't brown as well, and heat some oil in the pan before adding burgers to keep the burgers from sticking and to help sear and form a nice brown, crispy exterior.
- Either method will take about 10- 12 minutes of cooking time, depending on thickness of patty, temperature of heat source and your preference (we like ours medium cooked).
- Note: when pan-frying don't be tempted to press down and squeeze all the juice out, just turn them more often (turn only once on the grill).

BAKED HAMBURGERS
This baked hamburgers recipe is hearty and moist. The onion gives it a special flavor, and the sweet-flavored sauce further enhances the taste. I serve these as an entree with accompanying vegetables or on a bun as a sandwich. -Marg Bisgrove, Widewater, Alberta

- Next, frost one of the chocolate cakes with chocolate frosting (sprinkle with cocoa powder to mix up the color if you want). You can use both of the chocolate cakes on the burger-cake if you want or you can frost the other chocolate cake and serve it separately. I did it separately because I thought a double-burger-cake would be a little too huge.
- Place the chocolate cake on the "bottom bun". Mix in some yellow/red food coloring into some of the fondant (about 3/4 c. worth) to make a nice orange cheesy color. Roll out the fondant really flat, cut into a large square, and place over the chocolate cake.
- Mix some green food coloring into some of the fondant (maybe a cups worth) and roll it into a long roll (like a snake), flatten out and crinkle using a salad fork or anything you can think of to get that crinkle-y look. Circle it around the cake (as seen below). Color and roll out fondant to make the onions and tomatoes (see picture below) and place over the lettuce.Separate the vanilla frosting into 2 bowls. Color one bright red and the other bright yellow (ketchup and mustard), put in separate plastic bags and snip off a corner so you can frost the cake. Be generous with the "ketchup and mustard" and make it look nice and messy. Carefully place the second yellow cake over the top. Roll out some fondant to look like sesame seeds and sprinkle over the top. That's it! Pretty easy huh?
