Homemade Chili in a Can image

This is a wonderful quick recipe that is hearty and filling! This recipe can easily be modified. I use 3 cans of beans because I love beans! You can also add water to make it more of a soup.

1 pound lean ground beef
1 onion, chopped
1 tablespoon minced garlic, or to taste
½ teaspoon taco seasoning mix, or more to taste
2 (14.5 ounce) cans diced stewed tomatoes with chili seasonings
3 (16 ounce) cans chili beans, undrained
1 (15 ounce) can tomato sauce
1 (4 ounce) can diced green chilies

Steps:

  • Place ground beef into a soup pot over medium heat, and cook and stir until the meat is browned, breaking it up into crumbles as it cooks, about 10 minutes. Stir in onion and garlic, and cook until the onion is translucent, about 5 more minutes. Drain excess grease if necessary, and sprinkle the meat with taco seasoning mix; cook the meat with the seasoning for 1 or 2 more minutes.
  • Pour in the chili-flavored tomatoes, chili beans, tomato sauce, and diced green chilies, and stir to combine; simmer for 30 minutes to blend flavors.

Number Of Ingredients 11

1 Lb or 500 g ground meat of your choice (or for vegetarians, ground soya meat)
1 large chopped onion
3 Cloves garlic crushed / chopped
1/2 lb or 300 g mushrooms chopped (optional)
1 Bay Leaf
1 Tablespoon cornstarch
1 Stock / boullion cube
1 -2 Teaspoons Mild dry chilli pepper seeds. (adjust to your taste..the more (the hotter!))
1 Tablespoon Olive Oil
1 oz can whole peeled chopped tomatoes plus 1/2 can of water if necessary (14.5, no added flavours)
2 teaspoons sugar

Steps:

  • Make the chili, see here if you would like to use our Lovefoodies easy Chili Recipe.
  • Prepare your pressure canner. Heat jars and lids in simmering water until ready for use. Do not boil. Set bands aside.
  • Ladle hot chili into hot jars leaving 1 inch headspace. Remove air bubbles. Wipe rim with vinegar. Center hot lid on jar. Apply band and adjust until fit is fingertip tight.
  • Process filled jars in a pressure canner at 10 pounds pressure for 1 hour and 30 minutes for pints and quarts, adjusting for altitude.
  • Remove jars and cool. Check lids for seal after 24 hours. Lid should not flex up and down when center is pressed.

2 teaspoons vegetable oil
1 pound ground turkey
1 (14.5 ounce) can whole peeled tomatoes
1 (16 ounce) can hot chili beans, undrained
1 (15 ounce) can pinto beans, undrained
1 (15 ounce) can kidney beans, undrained
1 (28 ounce) can baked beans
1 (6 ounce) can tomato paste
¼ cup shredded Cheddar cheese
¼ cup sour cream

Steps:

  • Heat the vegetable oil in a skillet over medium heat, and cook the turkey meat until it's no longer pink, breaking the meat up as it cooks, 10 to 15 minutes. Pour the tomatoes into the skillet, and crush them into chunks with a spoon. Transfer the turkey meat and tomatoes into a soup pot. Stir in the hot chili beans, pinto beans, kidney beans, baked beans, and tomato paste. Bring the soup to a boil; simmer at least 10 minutes. Serve in bowls garnished with about 2 teaspoons of shredded Cheddar cheese and a dollop of sour cream.

  • In a large stainless steel saucepan, over medium-high heat, brown ground beef. Drain off fat. Add onions, garlic, green pepper, and jalapeno. Sautee until onions are tender. Add tomatoes, chili powder, salt, cumin seeds, coriander, oregano, chili pepper seeds (if desired), and cumin powder. Increase heat to medium-high and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and then simmer for 20 minutes. Skim off any excess fat that forms on the top of the chili.
  • Ladle hot chili into hot jars, leaving 1 inch headspace. Remove air bubbles and adjust headspace if necessary by adding or removing hot chili. Wipe rims with a paper towel that is moistened with vinegar to clean rims. Center lid on jar and screw band down until resistance is met, then increase to fingertip tight.
  • Place jars in a pressure canner. Adjust water level, lock lid, and bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Vent steam for 10 minutes, then close vent. Continue heating to achieve 10 lbs pressure. Process pints for 75 minutes or quarts for 90 minutes.
