GIVE A HOOT CUPCAKES

Steps:

• Frost cupcakes with chocolate frosting., Split the sandwich cookies in half, keeping the cream side whole (microwaving a few cookies at a time for several seconds helps to keep the cream side solid). Place the cookies, cream side up, on the cupcakes for eyes. Cut remaining cookie pieces crosswise into thirds; discard the center third and set the rest aside., With the vanilla frosting, attach the chocolate-covered mints for eyes; pipe pupils., Place reserved cookie pieces above eyes for the ears. Pipe chocolate frosting on ears and around eyes. For beaks, press yellow candies between eyes.

HOOT OWL COOKIES

Steps:

• Sift together flour, baking powder, salt. Set aside.
• Cream butter, gradually add brown sugar, creaming well. Add egg and vanilla; beat well.
• Blend in the dry ingredients gradually; mix thoroughly.
• Melt chocolate together, cool and add baking soda.
• Remove 2/3 of dough to floured surface. Blend chocolate mixture into remaining dough; chill if necessary for easier handling.
• Roll out half the light dough to a 10 x 4 1/4" strip. Shape half of dark dough into a roll 10 inches long; place on strip of light dough. Mold sides of light dough around dark: wrap in foil. Repeat with remaining dough. Chill at least 2 hours.
• Cut into slices 1/8 to 1/4 inch thick and place two slices toghter on a greased baking sheet to resemble an owl. Pinch a corner of each slice to form ears. Place a chocolate chip in the center of each slice for eyes; press a whole cashew nut between slices for a beak.
• Bake 350f 8-12 minutes. Remove from sheets immediately.

HOOT OWL COOKIES

Steps:

• Cream butter and sugar until fluffy. Beat in egg and vanilla. Add baking powder and salt. Beat well. Add flour and mix until blended. Remove 2/3 of dough. Roll or pat dough out to form two 10 x 4 inch rectangles. Add cocoa to remaining 1/3 of dough. Mix until blended. Shape chocolate dough into two 10 inch long rolls. Place on rectangle and roll plain dough to cover chocolate dough completely, not including ends. Wrap in plastic wrap and chill at least 2 hours.
• Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (180 degrees C).
• Cut dough into 1/8 inch slices with a sharp knife. Place two slices side by side on a cookie sheet to resemble an owl's face. Pinch upper "corners" to resemble ears. Put chocolate chips in each dark circle for eyes and a cashew in the center for the beak.
• Bake for 8 to 12 minutes in the preheated oven, or until lightly browned.
