HOW TO COFFEE MARKER
You have to start somewhere and the classic automatic drip coffee maker is a great place for beginners (or coffee drinkers of any skill level). A go-to for good reason, drip machine brewing is consistent, easy, and versatile enough to work with any coffee you like. But don't confuse simple for basic - you can expect really good coffee, easily on par with most manual methods. The secret's in the right grind, proper cleaning, and filtered water. And while this coffee recipe is specifically for a 10-cup coffee maker, you can easily adjust it for different amounts of coffee. Simply divide the water volume and coffee weight by the same number (E.g. 625 milliliters of water to 40 grams of coffee). Read on and learn how to use a coffee maker to its fullest potential.

Steps:
- Fill the water reservoir with cold water.
- If your drip coffee maker uses a [cone-shaped filter](https://www.drinktrade.com/4-cone-filters/p/201), fold the crimped edges in opposite directions before placing it in the filter basket. If you're using a wavy, flat-bottomed filter, place it inside the filter basket as is. Some coffee makers come with a reusable stainless steel filter; if that's the case, no prep needed.
- If you have a bag of pre-ground coffee, just skip right over to the next paragraph. If you're grinding fresh, start with a medium [coffee grind size](https://www.drinktrade.com/blog/education/coffee-grind-size-chart) (some grinders have a specific "drip" setting). Since most home coffee makers don't let you adjust settings like time and temperature, changing grind size is one of the most important ways you can influence [coffee taste](https://www.drinktrade.com/onboarding/question/1). Make sure to note your coffee grinder setting, so you can either repeat it or make an adjustment next time you're brewing coffee. Blade grinders don't have the same types of settings as a burr coffee grinder, so if you're using one of those, try to grind until most of your particles look roughly the size of sand. Add your grounds to the coffee filter and place the basket back inside the machine. Turn on the machine and wait for the brew cycle to complete. Your machine may have extra features like a "strength" selector, but our recipe works best at the default setting (and if you want coffee that's weaker or stronger than our recipe, you can always adjust the amount of coffee next time). Coffee brewing should take between three and five minutes on most machines, from the time the water starts dripping onto the coffee to when it drips all the way through the coffee ground.
- You've got some freshly brewed coffee ready to drink! If your drip machine has a glass carafe and an electric warming plate, we recommend taking that carafe off the warming plate, as the heat of that plate might make the coffee taste bitter. If you have leftover coffee and want to keep it piping hot, pour it in a thermos. As you drink your fresh coffee, note how it tastes. If it's more bitter than you'd like, you can grind coarser for your next batch, if it's a little sour or not sweet enough, grind a little finer.

- The Perfect Cup. For a pristine cuppa, the Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) has preparation standards for everything from water temperature and quality to specific ratios that make a “perfect” cup of coffee, from the time the beans are harvested until they reach your cup.
- French Press. The French press is a simple, elegant, and easy-to-use tool for making a delicious cup of coffee. It works by soaking ground coffee directly in hot water, which you then separate using a plunger.
- Iced Coffee. A summertime favorite for many, iced coffee is versatile and highly adaptable. It's drip coffee that can be served over ice or on its own, and can be adapted with different types of milk and sweeteners.
- Cold Brew. Like the name suggests, cold brew coffee is prepared without heat. Unlike traditional iced coffee which involves chilling hot drip coffee, cold brew entails soaking beans in water over a period of many hours, reducing acidity and bitterness and strengthening the caffeine content of the brew.
- Cappuccino. Small but mighty, the cappuccino is a classic Italian hot coffee drink that is usually 6 ounces in volume and made of equal parts espresso, steamed milk, and milk foam.
- Latte. This popular Italian standby is usually 10-12 ounces in volume and is made of one part espresso to two parts steamed milk with a thin layer of milk foam.
- Flat White. This espresso drink from Australia (or New Zealand, depending on who you ask) is very creamy in consistency thanks to how the microfoam is blended into the espresso.
- Café au Lait. Similar to the latte, the café au lait is a classic French drink that pairs equal parts strong hot coffee and steamed milk. Unlike its Italian counterpart, it’s made without espresso and typically with minimal or no foam topping.
- Cortado. Cortado comes from the Spanish word meaning “to cut,” and this small drink uses warm milk to “cut” the bitterness and acidity of espresso. Like the café au lait, the cortado is made of equal parts coffee and milk, although it’s both smaller and stronger thanks to the short size of the espresso.
- Macchiato. This small Italian drink is designed to be consumed in the afternoon, a counterpoint to the morning cappuccino. The name roughly translates to “marked” or “stained,” which refers to the dollop of milk foam right in the center of the beverage.
