Old-Fashioned Sloppy Joe's image

Number Of Ingredients 17

1 tablespoon olive oil
1 ¼ pound lean ground beef or turkey
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
1 small onion, diced
1 green bell pepper, diced
1 cup crushed tomatoes or tomato puree
½ cup ketchup
½ cup water
2 tablespoons brown sugar
1 tablespoon cider vinegar
2 teaspoons prepared mustard
1/8 teaspoon cinnamon
¼ teaspoon celery seed
Pinch ground cloves
Salt and pepper
Rolls or Hamburger buns

Steps:

  • Add oil to large skillet, and heat over medium-high heat. Crumble in ground beef and cook while breaking up meat with a spatula. Season with salt and pepper.
  • When meat is almost cooked through and beginning to brown, add in onion and bell pepper. Cook until beef is nicely browned and vegetables are beginning to soften. Drain off any grease.
  • Add tomatoes, ketchup, water, brown sugar, vinegar, mustard, cinnamon, celery seed, and ground cloves to the meat and vegetables. Stir to combine.
  • Cover with lid, leaving lid slightly ajar. Turn heat to medium-low and allow mixture to simmer for 45 minutes. Stir occasionally and add extra water if needed.
  • Season with salt and pepper to taste. Serve hot on buns, or try lettuce wraps for a lighter version.

1.5 pounds lean ground beef
1 bell pepper diced
1 medium onion diced
1 tablespoon montreal steak seasoning
1 cup catsup
1/4 cup brown sugar
1 tablespoon yellow mustard

Steps:

  • Cook beef in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Drain fat if desired.
  • Add bell pepper, onion and montreal steak seasoning. Sauté for five minutes until the onions are transparent and bell pepper is softened.
  • Add the remaining ingredients - catsup, brown sugar & mustard, mix to combine and heat through.
  • Serve the sloppy Joe meat on hamburger buns with sweet or dill pickles.

These Classic Sloppy Joes are made with just a few simple ingredients and can be served as a sandwich or used as a topping on a baked potato or sweet potato.

1 lb. ground beef
1/2 medium onion (chopped)
1/2 cup celery (finely chopped)
1 Tablespoon lemon juice
2 Tablespoons white vinegar
2 TablespoonS brown sugar
1/2 Tablespoon dry mustard (or substitute regular mustard)
1/2 cup ketchup
Salt and Pepper to taste
1/3 cup water

Steps:

  • Brown ground beef over medium heat in a flat bottomed skilled.
  • When the meat is pink and slightly under-cooked, add the onion and celery; finish browning the ground beef.
  • Drain off grease if needed.
  • Mix remaining ingredients and add to skillet.
  • Cook for 20-25 minutes over low heat until sauce thickens, stirring often.

1 1/2-2 lbs ground chuck
1/2 cup fine chopped yellow onion
1/2 cup fine chopped green pepper
3 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
2 tablespoons cider vinegar
1 tablespoon dried mustard
3/4 cup brown sugar
1 (26 ounce) bottle catsup
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
8 -10 hamburger buns

Steps:

  • Brown the ground chuck and onion in a large deep skillet.
  • Drain the grease from the skillet as well as possible.
  • Add the green pepper to the meat and onion and continue cooking until the green pepper is soft.
  • Add all the remaining ingredients and simmer for 30 minutes.
  • Serve on buns.
